“A great inn - exceptional hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

On our way to Quebec we had an overnight in Vermont and another on our return trip. Whitford House was an excellent place to break our trip. We had the south room traveling north and the north room on the return trip. Both ways, we enjoyed the exceptional hospitality of our hostess/owner, Barbara Carson, and her talented staff of helpers. Whitford House is on an unpaved country road in peacefull Vermont. If you arrive at night be sure to have detailed directions because there are no street lights and the markers are small and hard to find. Barbara will arrange dinner reservations for you - we suggest that you include The Starry Night Cafe in Ferrisburgh. It was probbly the best meal of our trip. The room comes with breakfast which is very generous, well served, and very good.

We just had 4 couples spend the weekend at this beautiful Inn hosted by the Owner Barbara. There are htree rooms in the main house and then a guest house. So we had the enitre Inn to ourselves. We spent 2 glorious days biking the Champlain Valley bikeways with the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain to our West and The Vt. Green Mts. to our East. We had a glorious stay with Barbara. She prepared gourmet breakfasts each morning including fresh made granola, fresh fruit, eggs florentine, zuchinni bread etc. We had cocktail hr. on the veranda each nite with appetizers and wine. Barbara made dining reservations for us booth nites. One nite in Ferrisburg Vt. at Starry Nite Cafe and the other nite at Black Sheep Cafe in Vergennes. Sumptious meals at each. One day we biked into Middlebuy and had lunch at The Otter Creek Bakery. We will all def. go back!

“Perfect B&B with gorgeous views, sumptuous breakfasts, excellent accomodations.”

We spent 3 nites at the Whitford Inn while visiting our daughter at Middlebury College. The innkeeper, Barbara Carson, is probably the MOST gracious person that I have ever met. Her service was as good as at any Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons. She made all of our dinner reservations , gave us excellent driving directions but what was most extraordinary was her generousity and passion for entertaining. We felt like guests visiting good friends at their beautiful country house. We had not been there for more then 10 minutes when she offered me wine and prepared a cocktail for my husband. Barbara then placed a well composed platter of fresh vegetables with a curry dip,a bowl of homemade mixed spiced nuts and warmed some freshly baked spanokopia for us to eat while relaxing by the fire.We enjoyed chatting with her while watching the sun go down over the Adirondacks.
Breakfast the next morning (all three mornings) was absolutely the very best that we have ever had at any Inn or B&B. Although this is a small inn there were 3 women preparing and serving us breakfast. There was homemade Granola, stewed prunes and apricots, baked apples with raisins, local yogurt ,fresh fruit platter, zucchini bread and then we were served Eggs Florentine with suasage( that was Day 1). Day 2 was bluberry pancakes, Day 3 we were served the lightest and fluffiest waffles(breakfast was always accompanied with a full table of other delights and breakfast meats and a tray with juices). Barbara invited my daughter to join us for hors d'heurves and breakfast everyday. The kitchen staff was as lovely and professional as at any top 4 star hotel.
Our room was cleaned while we were at breakfast, towels freshened twice each day. All of the towels and linens were of excellent quality and the bed was fabulous. The Inn is on a very quiet country road and so there is no road noise whatsoever. The grounds are lovely and the views incredible.
This was the first time that I have ever stayed at a B&B and actually felt comfortable using all of the public spaces. There were freshly baked cookies each evening which I enjoyed with a cup of tea.
My husband and I are looking forward to staying at the Whitford House Inn as often as we can. We would not even consider looking elsewhere(nor should you)!

“Pretty...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2009

We stayed one night at this cute B&B in May 2009. The weather was terrible and rained the whole time that we were there but as far as the B&B was concerned, everything was perfect. The room was very pretty, we were given the room with the balcony over the street which was nice. The owner is very nice, friendly and helpful.

“A Gracious Innkeeper”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2008

We came to Vermont to see the fall colors. We did extensive research on B&B's. Hoping for the best, prepared for anything else, after two turns onto country roads at dusk that left us wondering, we found the bright, cozy Whitford House. If you have done your research, you've seen the professional reviews -- the physical facts, the amenities.

It's a tricky business being an innkeeper of a B&B. Be a great breakfast cook. Local foods, fresh. Something different -- lots of different things -- every morning. Warm, friendly, but not intrusive. Mature, if you are lucky even wise. Knows the locality in all respects. Where are the colors? The local artisans? The best places to eat? The ways to get there, enjoyably? Interest in you, with respectful distance. Shares personal news -- how is Demeter, the aged sheep? But not pressing, not overdoing it.

This is Barbara Carson. A caring person. Interested. Helpful. Engaging. Not quite family -- but you feel could be.

And if you read, what a wonderful library. You will see many old friends on the shelves, and future friends you want to meet.

Very well done, as only work from the heart can be.
