First the bad news: When I first approached the front desk, a woman was complaining about a room switch and saying she would never stay at a Staybridge again, and indeed, the management had also switched our room to one with only one double bed instead of the two requested online. Not a deal breaker for us (a couple in our early 60's). We were given a $50 discount the first of three nights, and $20 off each of the other two nights. The discount did not show up on our credit card records for a couple of weeks. The people at the front desk were nice about it, but when I asked for a printed receipt as we were leaving, they insisted we call the online booking dot com to get one. The online place insisted the hotel should print it. A third call, to the hotel again, resulted in the desk people telling us they would call us in an hour. The next day, an email arrived, with the receipt attached. So it was a bit of a hassle to get the receipt, but they were businesslike about it, and not rude. The only thing very slightly wrong with the room was the lack of waste baskets. The bathroom had a small one, and the kitchenette had only a small one attached inside the cabinet door under the sink.
Now the good news: The room switch put us in a suite with a large conference table we didn't really need, but we spread out our two computers, which worked well with the internet connections. The kitchenette/table/living room was spacious, with a couch and chair and coffee table, and it had a nice TV (I'm guessing 25 inch screen), along with a dry erase board enclosed in a cabinet with nice doors, on the wall at one end of the long table. The bedroom had another TV. Both had a nice selection of Dish Network channels. The bed was excellent. Just the right firmness, so moving or getting into bed did not disturb the other person's sleep. The temperature controls were easy to operate, and the heating system was very quiet. The bathroom had toilet and tub in a closed off room, and the single sink vanity was discreetly placed away from the bed but within the bedroom. A roomy closet was next to the vanity, and a large dresser was next to the TV cabinet. Overall, it was very clean, with plenty of towels, soap and shampoo. The kitchenette included pans for stove top cooking (no oven, but it was not expected), a small sink, a new and full refrigerator with ice maker, toaster and microwave, and several cabinets, one filled with nice, clean glasses, cups, and plates. Silverware was in a drawer. The rooms had windows but no view, so it was very private. Outside, the hallway was narrow, and the room was adjacent to the maid's area, which was noisy as you walked by (Mexican music playing and laundry machines operating) but not at all annoying, and absolutely none of that could be heard inside the room. We did not use the buffet or breakfast, but I'm guessing they would have been very good, given the overall atmosphere of the hotel. The grounds were well kept. Parking filled quickly, but we were never more than 100 feet from the door. The hotel is 15 minutes by car from downtown Austin, but I would recommend bringing GPS if you're not familiar with Austin's highways. I missed a ramp and ended up on the wrong freeway one afternoon, so you must keep your wits about you in that city! Overall, our suite would be perfect for a basketball team or small business group, and even for a family. We enjoyed it.
Room Tip: You may avoid the slight problem we had with our room being switched, if you call the hotel instead...
