We stayed at the Woods House for a long week a few months back in the early fall. The best I can say is that the experience was very uneven, compared to other B&Bs and hotels we've stayed at locally.
First off, the property is at the very edge of walkable distance to downtown. If you have any difficulty walking or have small children, then this isn't the best place for you. You can't just "drop by" your room easily; it's a 15-20 min walk down a heavily trafficked street. Basically you have to walk into town for the day and stay there.
The property itself is tatty and run down. Both the gardens and rooms have seen better days. Our room was small, bathroom very small (you could barely turn around in there), with what looked like plain wrapping paper taped over the windows of an outside door -- for heaven's sake, spring the "big bucks" and install a window curtain already. Supposedly the new owners have spent some money on upgrades, but it wasn't obvious to me what the money had been spent on.
The innkeepers seemed odd, I just got a strange vibe from them that wasn't comfortable. Sometimes very friendly, othertimes distant or almost hostile. I got the impression that they're not used to the hospitality industry and all the human interaction it requires. From reading the other reviews on TripAdvisor, it sounds like they're a couple of doctors who are making a career transition or something. It shows.
Some of the other reviews raved about the breakfasts; I'm not sure what other people's standards are, but I thought the food was OK for a home-cooked meal, but nothing special. However I admit that I find most of the food in Ashland in general OK but nothing special. (Being from San Francisco, my expectations may be higher.)
Bottom line: I go to Ashland every year but won't be staying here again. For the money, you can get a B&B or a hotel closer to town with a property with better upkeep.
