“don"t stay here”

Upon arrival at motel there were 8 people at the Front desk complaining about service. First had special reservations and was to be in their room at noon. I arrived at 4pm. One person in the group was in a wheel chair and they had requested first floor rooms since they have no elevators. So they were giving second floor room and had been arguing with the desk to get in to first floor rooms since noon. Second group was arguing about why their room was not ready yet. A smart person should had left then. I had first floor pool side room for my young children. We were given a first floor room by the pool. As we are in the parking lot unloading the card the front desk comes out takes the keys to the first floor room and told us our room is now on the second floor. So we go check out the room. It a pool view room with no easy access to the pool for my young children. So off to the front desk I go. They tell me any room that you can see the pool from no matter what floor it is on is a pool side room and they charge extra for this. So the front desk explains to me that I don’t know what I’m talking about that along as you can see the pool it’s a poolside room. I asked to talk to manager of course like every body else that asked for her I was told she was not there and was at the park. But the manager would contact me later. Went back to the front desk again that night around 9 pm asked for the manager. Well she went home for the night ask then to call her then they told me no because she at home and not to be bothered. Well they offered at 9:30pm to move me and my family to another room since nobody showed up for it and it was a worse room with even a worse view. I was also told the manager had tried to contact me. So the next day on the second trip to the front counter I get the manager. I told I was not very happy about the room and being chased down in the parking lot and the room taken from me. Well she offered to move me to a different room and give me 10.00 off the room. Now this was 139.00 a night room. I told her the paint was peeling off the ceilings and hanging down, spider webs in the hall ways. The ceiling in my room was so dirty it was black. I said you know I have complained less at Sheraton, Comfort Inns and they have gave me free room upgrades, free dinner or made the problem better. Her answer sorry but we are an older motel and can’t afford the maintenance like chain motels. If I wanted something a little nicer I should have stayed at the motel just down the road. She wanted to try and make be happy but all she would do was moving me to 129.00 a night room. I asked her why she didn’t leave me a voice mail or note that they were trying to find me. Her reply we never thought of that. I told here I just want the rest of my stay canceled and we were leaving. Back in the room packing my son bumped the air conditioner and the front fall off of it. This is an old run down motel that need a lot of work and money to fix it up. This motel should only charge 40.00 to 50.00 dollars a night for any room in this motel. Stay at the Hilton Garden Inn and its only 8 miles away in Twinsburg. After six trips to the front desk and 24 hours of arguing with them the only thing I got was my leaving. They really didn’t care about any thing and never fixed any problems I had. THIS WAS MY FIRST AND LAST STAY AT THIS DUMP.

“Pleasantly suprised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2007

I have to say I was very nervous going to this hotel after reading all the bad reviews. I was however, pleasantly suprised. We stayed in the family deluxe suite and it worked out great. The room was extremely spacious with 2 queen beds, a pull out sofa bed, recliner, 2 tvs, kitchen table and chairs, fridge, microwave and desk. It basically was an apartment. The balcony overlooked the pool which was fantastic as we could relax and watch our kids in the pool. (our kids are at an age where they can swim alone) The staff were very friendly towards us. There is no elevator but that is really not a big deal as you are only going to the second floor. The only thing that disappointed us was the breakfast. The food for us was not that great. The scrambled eggs were soggy and the sausages really well done. It cost $32 for 2 adults and 2 children and was not worth it in our opinion. Although we didn't check around, I am sure you could get a better breakfast somewhere else for less money. The convenience of being right next to the amusement park was another great feature. I would definately stay in this room at this hotel again. Maybe we just got lucky with our stay but it definately worked in our favour. I would rate this hotel a 3++, it wasn't the Taj Mahal, but it was clean and close to all conveniences. For the amount of time you actually spend in your room, this was just fine.

“Use a debt card and you'll have a terrible stay.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2007

I'll cut right to the chase. This hotel gave my girlfriend and I a terrible weekend They charged me $217 on top of the cost of the package deal we got as a "authorization fee" because I used a debt card. They said the money is being held but it isn't a charge but it was still taken out of my bank account! This messed up our weekend because we are younger so we aren't made of money. When we got home and saw the fee, we called them about it. The staff didn't seem to know or care about it and the manager said he couldn't do anything about it. He said he could contact my bank but so far nothing has happened. He said the money usually is put back in 3-5 business days after you check out. I told him I want that money back in my account now and so far nothing has been done. I've stayed in a bunch of hotels, and my girlfriend's family travels every year and we have NEVER had this "fee" anywhere. Everyone I have talked to agreed that it is ridiculous and yet he claims it is pretty standard for hotels to do that.

On top of that, we got package B which has 4 park tickets and a 2 night stay at the hotel in a standard room. We were going to get there late Friday night so we planned to go to the park on Saturday and then check out Sunday and go to the park Sunday as well. When we check in, they give us our tickets and instead of 4 day tickets they give us 2 day tickets and 2 starlight tickets which can only be used after 5:00pm. Those were useless to us since we weren't gonna be there at 5pm on Sunday. After complaining to a few people they gave us 2 regular tickets for the starlight ones since there were only two of us but the website does not tell you what tickets you are getting so be careful.

Overall the hotel wasn't that nice, most of the rooms are in the back and face trees and rocks, we did get free breakfast buffet but the french toast sticks were hard and the eggs were cold. We had free mini golf but the course was small and every hole was practically the same.

I would not stay at this hotel ever again and if you plan a stay here, do NOT use your debt card. If you get a package, keep in mind that you are only getting 2 day tickets and 2 starlight tickets.

“Just Ok - A few changes could make this hotel Good/Great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2007

We have made the rounds at the "family-style" hotels recently (see other reviews) and this one I would give just an OK to. We just returned from a three night stay here. I think this could be a great hotel with a few minor changes, however, here is objective scoop on this hotel - as reviews/info is hard to find about this one.

Best Tip: If you stay here definitely book a package -with four people in the room you get over $200 worth of extras and tickets for an extra $20 per night - well worth it. Once you take that into consideration, your room rate hovers around $90 per nightish.

Recommendation: Ok if you want something close to the park and like lots of amenities to use. Good for small children and teens alike (see activities below).

One thing that must be known prior to reserving is that there is NO ELEVATOR in this 2-story hotel. Please take this into consideration when reserving.

Here are the details:

Location: The location couldn't be better as it is just about next door to Geauga Lake. There is a limited number of options in the area with the Betram next door, other than that you are looking at about 10 miles away. Retail and restaurants right down the road including Target and Wal-Mart. Not too far (on the same road) as the outlet mall - this road is a main road in the area that gets you to many major areas.

Staff: I agree with some of the other reviews. I didn't find rude staff as much as I found indifferent staff. When I asked them for something (e.g. silverware for room service, etc.) they pleasantly responded to the need. But weren't over accomodating - this could be slightly improved.

Rooms: We reserved a family deluxe room (the largest on site) and yes the room was very large. It appears that this hotel might have suffered water damage at some point in its history as the rooms started off having a musty smell that did disappear as stated in other reviews. The carpet/bed coverings and wall paper seemed rather new. Other amenities - kitchen area cabinets, bathroom counters, etc. seemed older and could be updated and/or decorated. The counter and storage space in this room was fantastic, there was so much shelving and storage we could unpack everything. A simple vent fan in the bathroom would make a world of difference. Rooms were OK -large and mostly clean but our room
- had a slow drain in the bathroom creating a bath when you took a shower - small improvement needed.
- had a few loose screws on the window treatments
- had a small mold area in the ceiling in the bathroom ( could be fixed by a vent fan).
I didn't see other room types so I can't comment on those.

Common Areas/Activities
The common areas in this hotel are well maintained - lobby, breakfast room, etc. They smell nice and are well maintained, actually I saw several cleaning people throughout the stay maintaining them. Some small improvements in some areas such as scratched paint on some room doors and window damage could make a big difference. Also, when I was there, only 1 of the 4 ice machines was working when we went.

Pool/Activities
The pool area as previously stated is nice, hugh real plants surrounding this atrium area. The pool was nice and the lifeguard was a nice touch. The pool area ceiling clearly could use a touch up and likely is in progress.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the hugh climber/tunnel (they should provide a picture of this on the site) play area for the kids - great for all ages. My kids loved this. They also had many large plastic (little tykes/step 2) type slides, kitchens, etc. for the smaller set. Very clean and nice environment.

Putt Putt golf was cleverly designed with a cat theme. Nice. There were a few broken props and a little touch up would make this even better. We had fun with this aspect of the stay as well.

Arcade. This was more of a disappointment. There is no tickets or redemption center for this arcade. The arcade is big but the games they offer are all for older kids/adults. Driving, riding and shoot-em-up games are aplenty. Nothing for my 4 year old to play. We didn't take advantage, but families with older kids might really benefit. Geauga Lake Park has many arcades with these levels of games.

Food/Breakfast.
Did not eat in the Amber Waves restaurant, but did order room service which does run until late in the evening which is great for after-park treats. Food was "ok" and was a little on the expensive side but was comparable to similar food in other hotels we have stayed in. Tip: Grab something at one of the restaurants right outside the hotel - e.g. Steak and Shake is open 24 hours and serves breakfast and dinner and desserts.

The breakfast was great and a great value as it is included in the room. It is a hot breakfast buffet which included when we were there: eggs, french toast sticks, bacon, sausage, potatoes, bagels, pastries, muffins, cereal, fruit and beverages (for those who want details). There were staff everywhere taking care of this, however, during busy times it seemed they had a tough time keeping up. Tip: Try to go before 9:00 if you can, as the rush occurs between 9:30 and 10:00. Also wish they provided tops for the juice and coffee cups so I could carry it out.

The pictures on the web-site do represent the hotel just as it is, I wish they had more there showing the climber.

This is a tough one to recommend or not recommend.

Remember your 2 night package for four people in the room (at the time I went included):
1. 2 parking passes for the park ($9 each)
2. 4 all day Geauga Lake tickets ($26.95 each)
3. 4 twillight Geauga Lake Tickets ($17.95 each)
4. 4 putt-putt golf tickets ($4 each)

This adds up to $213.60 so if you take about $100 of your room rate each night, this is what you are paying. For us, it was a value at less than $100 per night even given the "ok" rating. And with the added breakfast, I estimate at about $30 each day it becomes more of a value.

There was nothing that was absolutely TERRIBLE as it has been at other hotels we have stayed. I think for less than $100 it is ok

I would consider this again, but with the Family Deluxe room (110) again. I didn't love it but do think it is "ok". Only hotel in the area with as many kid amenities available, kids will have a good time.
