My husband, daughter, and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Akron-Fairlawn during soap box derby week. I acted as the liaison between our local families and the Akron All American Race so it was kind of a working vacation. What an experience!! The hotel staff were tremendous!! Anything we needed, all we had to do was ask. There were some difficulties with all of their ice machines; but you put that many people in a hotel during one of the hottest weeks of the summer, and you may run out of ice.
The derby activities were fun and the surrounding area offered other activities such as a zoo, amusement park, water park, and of course the NFL and Rock -n- Roll Halls of Fame (just to mention a few).
People throughout this city were great. From the local Walmart to the restaurants, to even a passerby helping with directions! Our deepest thanks!
What a wonderful trip!! Thank you to the people of Akron for making our trip a memorable one!
My daughter and I had booked here through a discount travel site. They had this listed as a 3 star, not so much...its a 2 star if that, the rooms are updated but we found hair in both beds and in the bathroom. They tried to move us and out of 4 rooms all had hair on the bed. That is disgusting. We ended up getting a refund and moved on to the nicer hotel Courtyard. If cleanliness is important to you, look elsewhere!
Convenient location right off interstate and near many stores and restaurants. Despite supposed recent renovation, the hotel seems dated and tired. The lobby was okay but the rooms only average and the bathroom small. For the price, I was unimpressed. Front desk staff seemed more interested in flirting with younger guests and themselves or surfing the Internet! The breakfast buffet was limited. I would likely stay somewhere else when I am in the areas again - but then again the other nearby choices are only so-so. Odd given that this is a well-healed area of Akron.
We booked an overnight trip to just get away for a night with our kids; this is only 50 minutes from our home. Unfortunately, in October, there is no indoor swimming pool -- one of the reasons we wanted to get away. However, down the road you can use the Akron General Health & Wellness Center (show your room key) for $8.50/adults; $5.75/kids 12& under... we spent the money after checkout so our kids could have some fun.
About the hotel itself - very nicely decorated following its big renovations. The rooms were nice, but the most important thing to me was the beds - they were SO comfortable!! I wished I had pulled up the sheets to see what kind of mattress and box spring they were, because they were wonderful! The sheets, pillows, everything was dreamy!! Rooms are equipped with hairdryer, iron & ironing board, and coffee maker - all essentials in my opinion for hotel rooms these days! The fitness room onsite was small, but my husband and daughter enjoyed the stationary bike and treadmill, and apparently there is a nice pool, but it is just outdoors...don't expect to use it from Labor Day until Memorial Day!
