“All things considered, a pretty nice place to visit!”

While the Quaker Square Inn at The University of Akron is NOWHERE near as bad as some reviewers suggest, I did find that the total experience is somewhat less now that it was when my tour group first visited this property back when it was a Crowne Plaza a few years back. As my group of 50 discovered when we visited for one night this time, on October 13, 2011 (on a six-day tour to York/Lancaster/Gettysburg, PA), the property is now primarily housing for University of Akron students, with only the first two floors a designated hotel. The several students that we ran into were not drunk and rowdy as suggested by another reviewer; they were gentlemen, quiet and classy, respectful to my Seniors, and were not a problem at all for my group. The lobby and restaurant at the property are beautiful, well-kept, and we found the service by everyone to be excellent . . . from the sales department, the front desk, the bell staff, the dining room staff, etc., everyone we encountered was very helpful, cheerful, professional and accommodating. A few of my guests and I commented that the rooms were a bit disappointing compared to our previous visit in 2005 . . . fixtures, furniture, lighting, A/C, etc., were a bit dated and worn, probably not replaced since our last visit. There were no views from any of the rooms on the second floor, but for one night, this wasn't a problem. My group and I enjoyed a most delightful and delicious dinner in the Trackside Grill at the hotel that evening, although being an educational facility, we learned at that time that the hotel was dry and my guests weren't able to enjoy a cocktail with their dinner. The included breakfast buffet the next morning was wonderful, and the hotel prepared a big box of oatmeal cookies for us to take when we left. All in all, the Quaker Square Inn is pretty nice . . . it's unique and historic, has a colorful history, the lobby and dining room are beautiful, the food was delicious and well-prepared, and the all-around service is excellent. The rooms may not be as plush as some might prefer, but this property still has a lot going for it.

“Quirky and fun”

I haven't stayed here in many years, but TripAdvisor asked me for the quirkiest place I've ever stayed, which has to be this converted silo in Akron, Ohio. I'm going to rate everything as "good" because that's what it was when I visited, but please take this with the knowledge that I have not stayed there for quite a few years.

“The worst excuse for lodging available in Akron !!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

This hotel's only saving grace would be to sell to someone who know how to manage a hotel.
I have never been treated so poorly by an establishment !. The room was NOT what I was told, the beds were so small and uncomfortable we did not sleep. the room was tiny and dirty.
I went to the front desk to ask for an up grade and was told that would not happen...and when I complained I was told no management worked on the week end. We suffered through the night and went to a very disapointing breakfast. The hotel is starting to run down quite a bit. and all the shops were closed. There were only a couple of other guests that we saw and obviously with good reason. Do not expect service nice accomodations or even common manners from the staff. This was our last time, a real shame as we used to like coming here years ago.

Room Tip: don't stay here

“Run-Down, Claustrophobic Student Housing Masquerading as a Hotel - Avoid at all Costs!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

While the marketing team at this God-forsaken former industrial park tried to put a positive spin on the experience ("Sleep in a Silo!"), sleeping in this particular silo means spending time in a claustrophobic and windowless pie-shaped space with stained rugs, mildewed bathrooms, dim compact-fluorescent lighting, and worn furniture from Walmart. My room was truly bunker-like, with little natural (or artificial) light, a rattling and ill-functioning air-conditioner, curved walls that prevented access to the beds, a circa-1990 tube-tv that could not be viewed from the beds, and a filthy and stained third-world "terrace." The housekeeper was surly. The bathroom drain was clogged. There are no services, period.

Only two floors of this absurd structure actually cater to guests. The remaining floors are occupied by University of Akron students, so this is a bit like staying in a very ugly and smelly dorm -- except that you're paying for it and that, well, you're all grown up. Hence, entering an elevator tends to mean stepping into a claustrophobic (again!) nest of drunken, rowdy college kids who shut up when you enter and laugh when you exit.

In the common areas, where there once was an ice maker, there are now pipes protruding from the wall, and whoever selected the insanely cheesy floral carpeting must have been on a very, very bad trip. The Quaker Square Inn must surely be the worst hotel in the country -- yet its fees are commensurate with, you know, normal and clean places. It is disgusting beyond belief. Avoid this pit at all costs.

Room Tip: No tips other than to suggest that you flee as fast as you can.

“Quaker Square Inn is now an Akron Univeristy Student Residence”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

Stayed 22-24 September 11. We found out why it is so hard to get any reservations to the once famous Quaker Square Inn. Akron University purchased the property and has turned it into a Dormitory (Student Residence) apparently due to the fact the university built a new stadium and in the process lost over 200+ dorm rooms and 500 parking spaces, so they purchased the hotel. The room (1st floor) we stayed in this time was really dated, no fans in the bathroom, poor lighting, the A/C was noisy and the room was musty smelling. An electrical outlet had no cover (1). the TV was one of the old 30 inch "boxy" TVs (that was screwed onto the top of the dated dresser in the room). Unfortunately, the hotel has changed a lot since our last stay (Jan 1999) and now the majority of the Quaker Square Inn is more of an Akron University Dormitory than a luxury hotel/unique experience that it was. Most of the restaurants and shops have been closed with only 1 or two remaining, now designated as eating establishments that cater mainly to college students on a budget versus the charm of the shops in the past. The hotel manages only 65 rooms on the 1st 3 floors, and the rest of the hotel has been converted into Dorm Rooms for Akron University, so you see lots and lots of students at a hotel that you would not normally see. The desk staff was friendly and worked hard to provide the service they could with what they had to work with. Frankly, we were disappointed that the hotel has gone the way it has. Since Akron University (AU) is just about the only "living" entity in Akron, it seems to be about the only "business" that seems to really be thriving. It is a small wonder that the Quaker Square Inn even still functions as a hotel any more. In addition, you have to drive quite a distance to find any restaurants of distinction and choices. From what we were told, the university might be thinking of offering a Hospitality Degree, of which they would be in a perfect position to operate the Quaker Square Inn as a real hotel, with the students operating the hotel as a "laboratory". Since AU now owns and operates the hotel, they would be encouraged to spend some money and update the hotel and bring the Quaker Square Inn back up to or even better than what it was once upon a time! For the price, I think our next excursion to the Akron area, we will most likely explore other options that consist of newer properties and surrounding amenities.

Room Tip: Wait until the Hotel refurbishes its facility and decides what it really wants to do with the proper...
