While the Quaker Square Inn at The University of Akron is NOWHERE near as bad as some reviewers suggest, I did find that the total experience is somewhat less now that it was when my tour group first visited this property back when it was a Crowne Plaza a few years back. As my group of 50 discovered when we visited for one night this time, on October 13, 2011 (on a six-day tour to York/Lancaster/Gettysburg, PA), the property is now primarily housing for University of Akron students, with only the first two floors a designated hotel. The several students that we ran into were not drunk and rowdy as suggested by another reviewer; they were gentlemen, quiet and classy, respectful to my Seniors, and were not a problem at all for my group. The lobby and restaurant at the property are beautiful, well-kept, and we found the service by everyone to be excellent . . . from the sales department, the front desk, the bell staff, the dining room staff, etc., everyone we encountered was very helpful, cheerful, professional and accommodating. A few of my guests and I commented that the rooms were a bit disappointing compared to our previous visit in 2005 . . . fixtures, furniture, lighting, A/C, etc., were a bit dated and worn, probably not replaced since our last visit. There were no views from any of the rooms on the second floor, but for one night, this wasn't a problem. My group and I enjoyed a most delightful and delicious dinner in the Trackside Grill at the hotel that evening, although being an educational facility, we learned at that time that the hotel was dry and my guests weren't able to enjoy a cocktail with their dinner. The included breakfast buffet the next morning was wonderful, and the hotel prepared a big box of oatmeal cookies for us to take when we left. All in all, the Quaker Square Inn is pretty nice . . . it's unique and historic, has a colorful history, the lobby and dining room are beautiful, the food was delicious and well-prepared, and the all-around service is excellent. The rooms may not be as plush as some might prefer, but this property still has a lot going for it.
