“The Aging Princess”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

Macakizi is like an aging princess. In certain lights, her beauty stuns and captivates. But then, at other times, you catch a glimpse of her crow's feet and age spots that only grow deeper with the passage of time.

There is no doubt this is a grand resort. It has the bucolic feel of an era gone by, and the grounds sprawl with abundant foliage. The property is expansive and the rooms have an open, airy layout. There is a certain bohemian chic, and an understated luxury that seems to evade some of the newer resorts being developed. The common areas, especially the breakfast area with its enormous concrete fireplace and cantilevered wood balcony, have fabulous furnishings that encourage lounging.

Apparently the resort itself closes down for the season at the end of October. So, be warned, if you go there in October the staff seems quite tired, burned out, and over it; and will take all paths of least resistance when it comes to service.

So if you come expecting the new-fangled, club-centric, nouveau VIP, five star experience, you will be disappointed. But, if you come to truly get away in a laid-back, one of a kind setting with an understated level of style and panache that feels more circa 1977 than 2011, Macakizi is your spot.

I, for one, look forward to my return.

“Massively Overpriced and Overhyped!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

We had heard great things about Macakizi and the reviews made it sound like heaven on earth and let me tell you it is one of the most overpriced and overhyped hotels we have ever stayed at in our lives!

It was our last stop on our honeymoon this summer and we were so disappointed with every aspect of the hotel. The staff was poorly trained, disgruntled and completely unhelpful, the rooms were sparsely furnished with old furniture, old appliances, the bathroom was tiny and there was mold in the shower. Our room would have had a nice view but there was a giant bush blocking it. For 800 euros a night it was shocking!

For those of you who have not been to the hotel yet, it is built on a hill, with reception in the middle with rooms along winding paths above and below reception and the pool area, spa, restaurant and oceanside deck along winding paths below reception. To top it off, it is landscaped with massive bushes which makes it impossible to see anything. In other words, the hotel is a total maze.

Upon our arrival, we were given a key and pointed in the direction of the room. There was no tour, we were not given a map of the property, we were completely left on our own to find our way around. When we got to the room, we were disappointed to find it small, poorly furnished, a tv that was built in 1998, no ipod docking station, a tiny balcony with a view that was obstructed by a giant bush and a tiny bathroom with mold in the shower. The only "luxury" was the Acqua Di Parma products....

Not only was the room completely over-priced but so were the food and drinks! Needless to say we only stayed one night (becuase we had already paid) and promptly checked out the next day. We ended up at another hotel that was 1/2 the price but 100 times more luxurious and relaxing.

Don't buy into the hype. This is a horrible hotel.

“Perfect Summer Vacation in September”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Been wanting to stay at Macakizi whole summer, but couldn't get a reservation until mid to late September because I guess we didn't plan ahead enough. Somehow that only worked to our advantage because the weather was still perfectly sunny and warm-hot every single day. The property was busy but wasn't too crowded which was great because we got to relax on our own if we wanted, and also got chances to meet and socialize with fellow vacationers. The breakfast included with the hotel rate was very impressive as well. The Aegean Sea was clean, clear and blue, perfect for a dip / swim if you wanted a break from relaxing on the sun deck. We meant to venture out to see Ephesus, but I guess we just wanted more of Macakazi because we only left the property twice to go somewhere locally in our six night stay. Overall we had a great experience, and most likely come back again in September next year.

“More Spectacular than Imagined”

Decided to stay at Macakizi after checking out the photos and reviews on Tripadvisor and Macakizi website, and I was not disappointed. It is hard to describe a feeling of being surrounded by such natural beauty integrated with the stylish and elegant hotel. The view is breath taking, the water is clear and blue, and the food is fresh and delicious. The sun deck is hard to leave because you don't know when you will be get a chance to be surrounded such natural beauty, comfort and service again. For me, it was just great place to award myself for working very hard. And as a business owner, I really appreciated all the work and details that went into this property. Though I can understand the negative comments I found of the other travelers on Tripadvisor about lack of eye contacts, I want to say that it may be the cultural difference as well just the staff /server not being able to understand / speak English. It may be not be what some travelers may be used to, but the staff seemed more than competent than to make you happy. About some travelers complaining about New York prices, I want to say New York is open 365 days a year. Macakizi is only open about 4 months a year.

Room Tip: Garden view is as lovely as ocean view :)

“Still the Best on the Bodrum Peninsuls”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

This was our 4th year back at Macakizi, and it just keeps getting better. The General manager, Derya and the Owner Sahir could not be more accomodating both to returnees like us, and also to first time guests. The food is spectacular, whether eating at the pool bar enjoying the buffet breakfast or the high end restaurant, all presided over by world class chef Aret. The beach club is great fun also and jumping in the late afternoon/early evening.
The hillside location overlooking the bay and the many yachts is spectacular. Our only regret was having to leave. We are already planning our trip next year.

Room Tip: junior suit facing the bay
