Macakizi is like an aging princess. In certain lights, her beauty stuns and captivates. But then, at other times, you catch a glimpse of her crow's feet and age spots that only grow deeper with the passage of time.
There is no doubt this is a grand resort. It has the bucolic feel of an era gone by, and the grounds sprawl with abundant foliage. The property is expansive and the rooms have an open, airy layout. There is a certain bohemian chic, and an understated luxury that seems to evade some of the newer resorts being developed. The common areas, especially the breakfast area with its enormous concrete fireplace and cantilevered wood balcony, have fabulous furnishings that encourage lounging.
Apparently the resort itself closes down for the season at the end of October. So, be warned, if you go there in October the staff seems quite tired, burned out, and over it; and will take all paths of least resistance when it comes to service.
So if you come expecting the new-fangled, club-centric, nouveau VIP, five star experience, you will be disappointed. But, if you come to truly get away in a laid-back, one of a kind setting with an understated level of style and panache that feels more circa 1977 than 2011, Macakizi is your spot.
I, for one, look forward to my return.
