This is a long one so I've broken the review down into sections!
Booking = We visited for the last week of the season, end of October 2011. Booked this holiday through TC website, we did visit the TC shop but they weren't coming up with too many options, however she did tell us one vital thing that the resort start shutting down at this time of the year. We booked the Monday over night flight option, which saved us £236 per person instead of the Saturday one which was more ideal for the kids half term. We got a very good deal for the distance and all inlusive 5* hotel.
Bodrum & Turkey = Loved Bodrum and Turkey, was very impressed with the holiday as a whole especially after a bad experience in Egypt last year, i suspected this might be the same as, but I was proved wrong. The importance of tourism is king to the Turks, perhaps if some the EU Med countries still had that attitude and no Euro currency they would be in a better financial situation right now, but anyway that's another matter.
We visited the Bodrum castle, marina, restaurants, kebab houses, jewellers, leather & fake clothes shops over the week and it was all good. My missus is an ace haggler and got very good deals in shops, remember they wouldn't sell it to you if they wasn't making a profit. She paid 10TL for tshirts/polo shirts etc even though they wanted 50TL!
We also took a ferry daytrip to Kos which only cost 12euros return each and kid went free. We were annoyed at the Greeks slowness at customs both coming and going. Kos Town has some ancient site to see but not very well looked after, some areas dirty and sites closed on certain days so reseach before you go. I've heard the rest of the island is nice but we didnt have time to venture far as the ferry arrived at 10:30am and we had to depart at 4:30pm. Remember Passport and Euros.
We meet some lovely people on holiday who recommended that we booked a trip via local tour operator 'Botur' to 'Dalyan' which was a beautiful river trip, a visit to a mud baths & natural spring, Ancient Tombs & Turtle Beach. Price was good value, trip was 3 & 1/2hrs+ to reach Dalyan but well worth it (not including complimentry trip to Turkish gold store). Mud Baths were great fun and experience, river trip and lunch was good too and we even see 2 turtles swimming up stream on our way to beach where they breed. Beautiful beach but would of stayed longer if holidaying in that area. Tour guide very imformative.
Hotel Location = Beautiful hilly area, rich in vegetation (and cats) situated 15-20 minutes bus ride to Bodrum (cost 2.75TL, about a quid) great service. No beach as such, Beach bars, Decking, Jetta & Pontoons down at seafront, when open! plus water sports options at expensive cost. Pedlo & Kayak were meant to be 'All Inclusive' but Pedlo's where packed away for winter and we were told Kayaks were only to be used for 1/2 hr free! There were Hill Lifts to get down to seafront. Sun set early over hotel as it is not facing the sun setting side.
Hotel = Modern looking extrerior/interior hotel except the tacky silver garden chairs and tables in the main bar area! Rooms above average and we had a great sea view on 2nd floor. Maid came and tidied room daily but when I left a tip mid way through the week the service went down hill for some reason, so do what I normally do and tip at the end of stay! There was a nice mixture of English, Welsh, Northern Irish, Dutch & French/Belgian guests.
Service Staff = It was the last week of the season so you could see that some of the staff were gagging for the week to finish. We had some great waiters especially 'Burhan'. We tipped certain staff and were treated very well before and after that point. In my eyes they are providing a service and proparly earn sod all? so what is 10 or 20 Turkisk Lira worth to you, £3 to £7 for a whole weeks service, it was well worth it for us.
Reception were good too, we were left without a pillow and a duvet one night and they arrived at no time. I also forgot my i phone charger which they charged on serval occasions.
Hotel Management = Although I had no contact with them myself there were several holiday makers who weren't happy with some aspect of the holiday and got very vexed at the issues which I may of in their situations. Because the hotel was closing around us I must admit it felt like taking your nearest and dearest on a nice romantic meal to have all of a sudden in the middle of meal to have the lights turnt up, music stopped, bill served and taxi ordered! However we were on holiday and didnt want to ruin our holiday by complaining all day and night.
There were complaints about lack of kids junk food, although they did serve this a hour before normal evening meal times as mentioned in the check in leaflets, why they didnt do all evening I dont know? We brought up our kid to try all different foods so he was happy. In all fairness they did do a snack bar at lunch except our last day which served pizzas, burgers, toasties etc. The management did seem to try and rectify other problems mentioned but after the damaged had been done.
Food & Drink = Lager choice was very good beer 'Efes'. Wines were OK with a bit of pop. Spirits were pretty poor as they were using up old stock. I thought this was fairly bad as spirits don't have a sell by date, so any that may have been left over, could be used next year. There were times when there was no vodka which is the number one selling spirit in the world. Some more appeared after a few nights complaints.
Buffet style hot food at various times of the day, they had a fairly good choice for an all inclusive, but often warm. Its hard to keep mass produced food hot as it dries out under hot lamps. Good choice of bread & soup, cold salad/buffets and sweets. At breakfast you could get freshly cooked fried eggs or omelettes. On the first 3 nights they cooked one meat on the outside BBQ which was great but after some more guests left and it got colder at night they stopped this. Snack bar was open for 6/7 days at lunch, pizza and toasties were good, burgers not so.
Entertainment = Serious lack of it, the 'Animation Team' events had seemed to have been cancelled for the week via the info board which after my Egpytian experience, was a relief! However they appeared after a couple of days but they shouldnt have bothered as they didnt seem to do nothing for the kids in the daytime and at night, just clowned around being annoying. They did try to do some shows in the conference room which were dreadful. However the poolside karaoke singer/dj whose name escapes me, but who looked like Borat was excellent and between us, him and a few other fun loving guests created a few good poolside/bar nights.
It would be great if these holidays could get the Entertainment right like in the UK but I think the 'All Inclusive' and 'Entertainment' never seems to go hand in hand. Shame, big market out there....
We read hundreds of reviews beforehand and all hotels have good and bad reviews. All in All, we had a good time, the weather was great and that's all that matters... Good Luck ;-)
