“A Royal Let-down”

We booked our holiday for the second to last week of October, which is also the second to last week of season, and having been to Gumbet previously I knew to expect it to be quiet. Seeing the hotel in the Thomas Cook brochure and reading reviews on here made me think that we would have a brilliant holiday here but this was not the case. Not that the holiday was bad, I was just led to think that the rooms and things would be nicer because of the reviews.

The location of the hotel is ok. Situated about a 5-10 minute walk from Bar street where the main action is, it is on a main road, and there are restaurants and bars further up the road, and there is a small grocery shop next door when you can buy water and snacks. If you are planning to cook a lot you would need to make a trip to the supermarket, which is on the way to Bodrum and the dolmus (local bus) takes you for 2.75TL or about a pound. You can get it from right outside the hotel.

Upon arrival at the hotel we were taken into our room which was situated in Block C.It was on the top floor though, which having my daughter who is 19 months old was not ideal as it meant carting her and the pushchair up 2 flights of stairs every night. We asked for a room on another floor but were told there were none available yet when other people arrived during the week they got lower floored apartments that had not had anyone else in them.

The apartment that we were put in was clean-ish. There was a funky smell in the bathroom from the drains and it could have been cleaner. There was fluff and hair on the floor of the shower before we used it, and the shower head was a little manky, but I have seen worse. One thing I would advise to anyone considering in Gumbet would be the tiled floors in the bathroom, extremely hazardous when wet and there is rarely anything anti slip provided, there wasn't at the Queen's. The towels we got left were a mixed bag really. All were white but we had one huge fluffy soft one, and the others were crispy and fraying.

The door between the bedroom and living area wouldn't close as the door frame was coming out of the wall, and the cover-strip on the floor between the bedroom and living area was split and my little girl kept tripping over it, one occasion she sliced her toe quite badly on it. The balcony was terrifying for me as we were on the top floor. They are made out of glass panels and every time my daughter went out there for breakfast or to bring the beach towels in I would constantly make sure she didn't bang on the glass as it didn't look toughened in any way. There was also quite a big gap between the glass and the floor of the balcony, big enough for a crawling child to get through. The cooking facilities consisted of 2 rings which is fine as we ate out apart from doing beans on toast in the morning for the little one but if you are planning to come and cook you might need to bring pans and utensils as the ones in the apartment were poor. We also only had 1 glass in our room but were given some from the bar when we asked. The pull out bed that me and my daughter shared was awful to sleep on. It dipped in the middle and was so uncomfortable. I woke up with back ache every morning, and we were not shown how to fold it back in so it impacted on our space situation further. We also only got very thin blankets, and were not given more when we asked so paid to have the A/C on as it was very cold at night. The batteries in the remote for the TV had also ran out, and were not replaced which wasn't a major thing but I had to stay in ill one night and was so bored.

The staff were ok, I thought they would have been more hands on with all the people staying there but they weren't, and apart from playing chase with my little girl, they didn't really make any extra special effort, but they were always polite. I have to say that the Turkish night that the hotel host was brilliant, and probably the best one I have been to in Gumbet so far due to the comedy. The pool area wasn't that great. The kids pool was filthy and freezing, and the larger pool was not cleaned once while we were there and is just one depth, not the most ideal thing for the older kids that may have just learned to swim. The sun loungers were ok, but some were broken and the same people seemed to get the best ones each morning despite the signs that say reservations are not allowed until after 8am. We preferred making the short walk to the beach or going to Bitez beach by taxi for about 15TL.

We had a night flight home, and paid the £20 to keep the room on as we needed somewhere to shower and it is much less stressful doing this as you are not having to worry about your bags, although the hotel do have a dedicated bag storage room.

I might come back if I was on a girls holiday rather than a family one, but it is doubtable especially as there are nicer hotels in the Bodrum area, it is not really my cup of tea but it might be suitable for other people.

Room Tip: Ask for a lower floor if you have walking difficulties or are travelling with young children.

“Dissapointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Having read all of the reviews on here and see that the Queen Resort was rated #1, I thought this was a banker to be a fantastic hotel. I was wrong and I can't believe this is rated so highly.

I need to preface me review by saying that we visited the last two weeks in October which we discovered were the last two weeks of the season. Even the Thomas Cook reps got the plane home with us. As our holiday went on, more and more bars and restaurants closed down and bar street was dead. So whether some of my complaints below are due to it being the end of the season I don't know, but even if it is, I think they are unacceptable.

Firstly the accomodation - the rooms are relatively modern and spacious. The room we had consisted of a lounge / kitchen with two sofas (at least one converted into a double bed), a bathroom with shower, loo and sink and then a bedroom with two single beds. There was a small balcony with a table and three chairs.

The kitchen side of things was a bit poor - we only ate breakfast and lunches in so we coped - we don't go away to cook full meals on holiday but if you do then good luck, you'll need it. The utensils / and crockery was very sparse.

Apart from the above, the apartment was fine for our needs, some apartments at the back of the plot had bigger balconies and may have been bigger inside. One tip though, blocks A and B are close to the reception /bar and the generator so there is a good chance you will get kept awake by those. Maybe request block C or D to get away from this.

The general hotel was ok but the main bad points for me were:

- we only went down to the hotel's Turkish bath on our last day as our flight home was late, they wanted £20 to extend the checkout from midday to 9pm which we turned down, so they let us use the showers in the turkish bath - quite frankly I would never recommend anyone paying to use the Turkish Baths at the hotel if the shower rooms are anything to go by. The shower flooded because the plughole was matted with hair, the walls were dirty and peeling, litter on the floor - DISGUSTING

- As others have said, the time of year we went the sun rose just behind the bar to the left (as you face it) and moved around throughout the day to the right (again as you look at the bar) until it dropped behind the accommodation blocks. This meant that in October you had to get a bed along the back wall to get decent amounts of sun, and even then it was only 9:30 - 16:00

- because of the point above it was initially difficult to get a sun bed early in our holiday and people tended to reserve them from 8am. Also the sunbeds are all crammed in along the back wall meaning you may be lying rather close to someone on the next bed that you don't know. Finally on this point a lot of the sunbeds were broken.

- the staff seem to have made the holiday for most people on previous reviews. For me the staff were rather poor - don't get me wrong I always felt that if I asked them something they would do it, but in previous hotels the staff have always made an effort to get to know the guests, here they didn't. In fact on our stay it seemed they were only bothered about looking on the internet and chatting up their English girlfriends who seemed to be all over to stay for the week.

- I never saw the pool get cleaned. It may be because it was very cool (in the pool) the weeks we were there, but people did use it and some grubby little kids (of guests) even spat in it and threw stones in so in my opinion it still should have been done. On the day we left I even noticed there were big green patches of mould (?) in the pool and loads of the tiles were missing.

- the towels provided in the rooms varied from brand new looking fluffy towels to threadbare towels that looked like they had been around for years.

- In the block we stayed in, the fire alarm "break glass" panels were not in use and had little labels on them to say so... thats great if there is a fire and they can't get people out.

- since we were on the second floor, when the group of girls on the third floor decided to come back from bars at 6am every morning, we were always woken up by the sound of high heels on the tiled floor above... maybe worth asking for a top floor to stop this.

Overall it seemed like it could have been a good hotel but the staff just weren't interested (possibly because end of season) and there was virtually no maintenance of the hotel.

The good points:

As for location, the hotel is on the main street running through Gumbet, but is away from the main bar / restaurant area so isn't too noisy, but only a short stroll from the main areas if you want to go there. It is also not far from the beach.

There are a number of excellent restaurants in Gumbet, check my other reviews to see which ones I recommend but I don't really think you can go far wrong with any of them.

I hope this review helps - I normally take most of the negative reviews on here with a pinch of salt as being written by moaners, but I have tried to give a balanced

Room Tip: If you want to be away from the noise (bar / generator) then request block C or D. Rooms on the fron...

“Gumbet for the young.”

We really enjoyed our holiday here at the Queen Resort, it was very clean and the staff were very friendly but I think self-catering is totally out of the question at this hotel. The facilities are not what you would expect say in Europe, plus there are no near supermarkets to buy food from, only small shops which have a very limited stock. I think it would be much better and cheaper to go half-board or fully inclusive, as to eat out each night is rather expensive for pensioners. Also this is a resort for younger people as there are so many discos which blare music out till at least 4 o'clock in the morning. Still Bodrum was a super place and overall we did have a wonderful time.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are quieter.

“Very Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

I and my partner stayed at the Queen Resort for a week. Upon arrival I guess it looked as I thought, the street it’s based on is okay, not by anyway amazing with a Chinese restraint attached a fake handbag shop across the road and a small shop next door which is very useful. I was hoping for a nice room and I have to admit they were very clean and the furniture was great, very modern etc however the room we had was some what disappointing with a huge yellow generator right beside one of the windows the other window was facing another balcony a bit to close for comfort. The TV remote was pointless as buttons were missing, towel rail was hanging off and there was a telephone in the bathroom? But the socket was wide open exposing wires. Considering we went so late and it was the end of the season the hotel was fairly quiet, I was so disappointed with the room that I went to reception to ask if we could get a better room, the young ‘receptionist’ was incredibly rude and this really rattled me she said I could have another room, pointing from where she was sitting I said I didn’t know the room numbers so she rudely tutted stood up then showed me, she was offering me a room about 10ft away from the bar so just left it, no apology, not a word.

The rest of the staff are friendly enough, but I think you need spend more money on food, sauna etc to get on there good side however all credit to the cleaner(s) they do an excellent job, cleaning dishes and making a real effort with the beds.

The pool is nice and clean although as noted by someone else you can only lie on one side where the beds are quickly taken. Overall I honestly can’t believe this hotel is rated number 1 in Gumbet, in my opinion is doesn’t deserve to be.

As an area we will never be back, the area is very very tourist oriented and we personally found everyone incredibly rude from shopkeepers to restaurant owners they are desperate 24/7 to get you in, if you don’t go in they are just rude. Once you are in, they are rude. In terms of places to go we found the restaurant/pub just along the road from the hotel called Bronze Corner really good, friendly staff and fairly lively. There is also an Indian called BRONZE which serves very nice, genuine Indian food although quite expensive is definitely worth it.

Overall I was really disappointed we took a trip over to Greece for the day and went here last year so will certainly be picking this over Turkey. I think if you enjoy wearing Adidas ‘cottons’ have shaved hair etc etc this is the holiday for you, lots of chav/ned type family’s. Not for us, lesson learnt.

Stayed here for one week mid October and had a fab time, room was very nice, clean spacious and welcoming, cleaners were so lovely. The pool area was very nice and all the people working there were so friendly, I have nothing bad to say about my experience in Turkey. I will be coming back. If your a cat lover you will be in heaven though can be upsetting seeing all the stray cats and dogs! Thank you Queen's for making our holiday so great!!
