“Nice hotel.”

Stayed at Ali Baba in july 2010. I read all the reviews about it while deciding where to stay and maybe expected more than we got. The rooms are nice and clean and the location is grate. Didn´t take to long to walk to the beach and some good and cheap restaurants few blocks away. We booked a trip through Thomas Cook and booked with breakfast. The breakfast was really basic - new bread, boiled eggs, butter and jam, tomatoes and cucumber, coffee and tea. We had our 11 year old and 17 year old with us and I don´t know how it is in Turkey but in Iceland kids that age usually don´t drink coffee or tea. We manage to get a juice for our 11 year old but had to buy a glass for our 17 year old doing breakfast. We had to pay for air condition - rather expensive but worth it as it. The beds were OK but I missed a refrigerator in the room. Could have used one for keeping water or other drinks cold in the room. The pool was fine but not much going on there and not a good place for kids. I would think that this was a grate place for adults but would not recommend it for families with kids under 16. We took a few trips but the best was the trip to the mountains - cheap and the food was grate. The boat trip was also grate. Gumbet is a really nice place. The food at the restaurants near the beach is rather expensive but you the food up town at the local restaurants were really good and cheap.
Saving the best for the rest - Harry the barman was one of the best thing about this hotel - and the music at the pool :)

“certainly not spotlessly clean”

we stayed for 1 week in september and although we didnt pay much iv stayed in far better hotels .the reports that its spotless are rubish ,our room was not cleaned and we had to ask for fresh sheets ,also the so called dining area ?? a covered lean to like someones garage was dirty with very soiled table covers and filthy sugar and salt dishes .
the showers dont work and that was the oppinion of everyone we spoke to so it wasnt a 1 off ,i dont know how people can give good reviews unless they dont wash ?.the water was either freezing or scalding hot ,dangerously so ,and it took me 45 mins to rinse my hair as i could not control the temperature .
harry the barman is a great guy no doubt about that but we dont hang around our hotel bar all day as we like to go out so that didnt really make up for the fact that i felt dirty due to the lack of shower ,i would not return here as i believe theres better accomidation available .

“Fantastic hotel and Staff ..Loved it, you wont regret it :o)”

We holidayed at the 'Ali Baba' a family run hotel in Gumbet from the 20th august 2011 for 2 weeks. We (female 40, male 42)booked this on a whim...price was unbelievable, be silly to pass. We checked the reviews when we returned home and were so apprehensive due to the mixed reviews. It is a ' 2 star' and the accommodation reflects this but it was 'super clean' due to Sonny's wife and another young girl, (sorry iv'e forgotton their names) who were absolutely fantastic.Clean linen and towels every 2 days. They are a lovely couple, so genuinely helpfull. The pool was spotless as were the grounds as these were cleaned regularly. The owner seb and his family were equally helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The bar is the hub of the hotel with a barman that i can only describe as being a sandwich short of a picnic!. Harry is the nicest person you shall encounter whilst in Turkey. Due to Harry you will never have the time to feel bored, lonely or hungover...it doesn't happen in Harry's world. He makes friends for you and becomes a friend. Nothing was ever too much bother for any of the staff at The Ali Baba. It's a fantastically basic hotel. Basic amenities with a 5 star holiday. You get what you pay for, but the added extras more than made up for that. We had a fantastic holiday....so much so we were only home 3 days when we booked again for August next year. You won't regret booking....:-) We certainly didn't. This hotel has regular holidayers that return year after year...We have experienced why and are so glad we did...Rating should be more than 2 star....

Room Tip: There are no balconies but there is so much space around that you don't really miss it..

“Ali Baba Rocks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

I had my 50th birthday in Gumbet earlier this year and friends had been to the Ali Baba before and reccommended it. Myself and 3 friends (1 male, 2 female) arrived at about 1am and were met by what can only be described as an apparition brought on by too much alcohol. The only problem was that we hadn't had a drink yet so it must have been real. The hotel Barman, Harry, had Yetti boots, a Kevin Keegan curly wig, and a pair of oversized Beer Goggles on when he met us off the coach. He took the girls' cases and had a race to the bar with himself making racing car sounds as he ran away from us racing with a case in each hand. This set the tone for the whole holiday. To call Harry MAD would be an insult to genuinely mad people, he is quite honestly one of the funniest, craziest and wierdest people I have ever had the good fortune to meet. He was, and still is, definitely at least one ring pull short of a six pack. Having said that he is also one of the most honest and reliable people I have ever met in Turkey. In case you havent picked up on it yet, we absolutely loved the Ali Baba and would not hesitate to book there again.
Situation wise, it's about 100 yards from our favourite restaurant (Jacks Place, review already written) and a further 50 yards or so to the start of the main drag so well within easy reach of all of Gumbets amenities. Close enough to all the best restaurants and the night life, including Bar Street, but still far enough away to be quiet on a night too.
The hotel itself is small and family run, as most of the best ones are, about 24 rooms, a bar, small reataurant and a pool. The pool stood out above all others I've seen in Gumbet because it had steps so you could walk straight into the pool, not just ladders to climb in and out with, so was easily accessible for all ages and all fitness levels. Airbeds, rings and play balls were all available for all to use. WiFi was available at a small charge (about 80p for 30 minutes) so keeping in touch with the outside world was easy. The rooms were basic but clean and clean towels and bed linen was brought in about every 2 days. Breakfast was your basic Turkish breakfast but full English was available at a charge. Bar snacks were available during the day and were nice and cheap and well cooked.
The owner, Seb, and all his family and staff made everyone feel very welcome and were a pleasure to deal with on a daily basis. Aircon was, I think, about £40 a week and a safe was only £5 per week, which is probably just below the average for Gumbret hotels these days.
If you have any questions about this ideal hotel then i would be pleased to answer them, please find me at i_houghton@yahoo.com
Looking forward to seeing everyone again next year, thanks guys for making my 50th such a special holiday.

Room Tip: Anything ground floor is handy for both bar and pool.
