“Manastir--great views but impersonal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

stayed at the Manastir in June 2011. What a view from our balcony--the sea, the harbor, the pool--magnificent. Though the hotel staff is very aloof, it may be their relative lack of English language knowledge. The room was very creatively done, with outstanding original artwork featuring Bodrum sights. I couldn't pry it off the wall so I photographed it. The only drawback was the hotel's location high up and away from the waterfront; almost impossible to walk to with one's bags of souvenirs and clothing purchases. But that, of course, is what made the views so spectacular.

Room Tip: spend the money on a room with a balcony

“Over-and-above Reception guy made it for us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I won't repeat what has been said before about the stellar view, nice breakfast, etc. I won't take issue with flymeaway2's bed problem, other than to say we didn't share it - our bed was just fine. All in all, it's a great and well managed property and the view is definitely okay (see photo). It's also far enough away from the mosque that the 6am call from the muezzin isn't an issue, which is a major, major plus.

On the negative side (sort of, for some) the quiet is achieved by the hotel being high up above the port and off to one end. This didn't bother us and we walked down at least twice a day, but if you don't like walking up a flight of stairs, you're *not* going to like this location (yes, you could get a taxi for the short hop, but don't even think of driving your own car into the restaurant area).

What made our stay memorable was the help given by one of the Reception staff. Just after breakfast one morning we discovered that one of the guides employed by our tour company had accidentally taken a folder containing all our information on our flight to Istanbul and back home the following day. Accordingly we phoned the guide from our room to ask for the flight numbers. No answer. I came upstairs to ask someone at Reception to repeat the call for me, as the Turkish telephone system is different from ours and I wasn't sure what type of response I'd had. A fellow in Reception made the call for me and assured me that he'd had no answer either. I thought, alright, I'll call again after we've gone for a tour of the town.

Imagine my surprise when we came back later and were presented with faxed copies of our airline e-tickets - the fellow who had made the call initally had kept the number and the details of what we needed, tried again succesfully and gotten everything we needed. Instead of spending the remainder of the afternoon on the phone, worrying about our flight, we were able to relax and enjoy ourselves.

I am very impressed by behaviour like that; he is an example to any hotel person who wants to do the right thing.

“Middle-range resort hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

This hotel was a little disappointing despite the amazing views, and the quality of the rooms about which I have nothing to complain - they are clean and well-appointed. The rest of the hotel does seem to cater to tour groups mostly, has very little charm. Admittedly, I was part of a small group tour. The pool is over-chlorinated and the breakfast buffet is mediocre and boring compared to other place in Turkey. It feels like a mid-range resort hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony facing west over Bodrum bay. The views and patios are great and the...

“Loved the Property but the Bed Gave This Hotel a Less Than Stellar Review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

Stayed 3 nights in mid September at Manastir Hotel, booking directly with the hotel via e-mail. I booked a sea view room and we were not disappointed with the room or the view when we checked in. We were pleased and impressed with the details of the room, cleanliness, spaciousness and our large deck overlooking the bay. Thoughtful touches were complimentary slippers, bathrobes for our use and two complimentary small bottled water our first day. For what bottled water costs it would be nice if this was provided daily. The breakfast buffet was extensive and plenty of staff were clearing plates, re-filling breakfast items from the buffet, etc. Excellent breakfast.

Unfortunately one of the most important factors in rating a hotel is what your sleep was like and ours was awful. The bed in our room was two singles pushed together and made up as one large bed like a king. This was fine and we are used to this throughout Europe.

However the one single bed was so old and damaged that it should have been tossed by the hotel long ago. What were they thinking leaving this in a room of a hotel of this calibre?? There were lumps in the bed, springs broken, and it was unusable. I had hard bulges pushing into my ribs, my knees, etc. Therefore we tried to sleep on a single bed and one does not get a good night's sleep with two people squished into a single.

What was more perplexing and disappointing from my viewpoint of the management was that on the second morning (after 2 night's sleep) while enjoying breakfast the restaurant manager (I believe she was) gave us a review of the hotel to complete. Of course the restaurant portion received rave reviews because we were very happy with breakfast. However when it came to the hotel and room, I explained the mattress and bed in our room and the problems associated. No one at any time after I filled out the review bothered to come to the room or ask us if they could check out the mattress and possibly resolve the problem. Not impressed with management at this hotel.

“View is to die for”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Stayed two nights here, as a part of a group. As I did not pay for the room, and the meals were discounted by 25%, I can't really judge this commercially. But the room was clean, and very quiet. The way in which room charges are managed in Turkey is however unimpressive, even if I did not ever experience a problem. Waiters take your room number with your order, and you never get to sign anything, and in fact don't even know the total on the bill till you check out, and even then their habit is to just tell you the total. Asking for a printout can result in a scowl. So this practice is not something that any particular hotel should be criticized for.

The food served in the restaurant was good, and enjoyed by most of our group. Service was generally good to excellent, but ordering omelet for breakfast is problematic, as they send you back to your table to wait, and then give the omelet to someone else. The only issue with this hotel is its not central, and high on the hill - hence the magical views from the restaurant and pool deck. But a taxi fare is about 15 lire one way, hardly a big amount.

Room Tip: Not aware of any issues. Area is relatively quiet.
