Starwood Hotels and Resorts needs to get with the program and understand that it is penny-wise and pound-foolish to charge for wi-fi internet usage. During an extended trip In Turkey in November 2011, our group stayed in a range of properties from boutique modest to grand luxury, and with the exception of the Sheraton Ankara, fast reliable internet connections were ubiquitous and free (and even in many restaurants as well).
It is a shame that in a property, which is otherwise, spanking new, with exceptionally professional and kind staff, an excellent and reasonable restaurant, and great facilities (a lavish pool and spa area is provided without charge, a facility that costs far more to run and is used by a lower percentage of clients than is the internet) the experience is spoiled by being nickled and dimed for such a charge as for the internet (and for each device one connects).
The staff apologetically explained that they would be happy to provide the wi-fi service for free, but that the corporate office of Starwood Hotels does not permit it. Surely in a property of this calibre, the modest returns from such a charge cannot be critical to the bottom line, so when will Starwood and other corporate hotel groups wake up to the trend in the marketplace? Until then, those who depend on internet connectivity would be wise to choose among the many competing options in Ankara.
