“Nice beach, pricey!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

First of all, be advised Seychelles is a very expensive place for Westerners, this hotel is no exception--not for the budget minded. The Le Meridien is a short drive outside of town and is situated on its own, isolated beach (save for a few beach bungalows that share the beach). The rooms are average; half the room is a large bath with a soaking tub in the middle of the room. Showers are nice. The sleeping area is smaller than average. As of May 2010, the property is showing signs of wear typical of a beachfront resort (rusted fixtures, moldy smells in carpet, etc.). The grounds are very nice and its enjoyable to stroll around the property. The restaurant (can't remember which one we ate at) had very good food and service, though it was extremely expensive. This hotel is best for honeymooners that want to shack up and not be bothered.

“Trys hard... Could do better!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Lets just say, this hotel doesnt live upto the 'Le Meridien'brand.... Its trying very hard, but the staff do the bare minimum to make you happy, with the exception of a few people... Audrey at the reception went out of his way to make us comfortable, aswell as another guy working on recpetion, I didnt get his name. Most of the other staff are very robotic, with little interest in the guests.

The food is good, rooms are clean and comfortable, the location on the beach is excellent... You cant beat it during the day... But come 8pm... Everyone has retreated to their rooms to drink either the duty free, or drinks from the shop next door... There is no evening entertainment other than the band in the restaurant, which is sadm they are very good and spend most of the evening playing to a couple of people...

If you are looking to completely relax, this is a great hotel... But dont expect the service you usually experience from 'Le Meridien'

Dear Tomwmorton,

We were delighted to hear that you had a good stay with us at Le Meridien Barbarons. It was nice to hear that the front desk exceeded your expectations. They work exceptionally hard to make every guest feel special.

We are pleased also to hear that you enjoyed the food, room and the beach. We have taken note of the points raised regarding evening entertainment and service, and the same will be addressed with all concerns.

Thank you so much for staying with us and we hope to see you in the near future.

Yours Sincerely,

“Fantastic Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I have just returned from a short business trip to Seychelles staying at Le Meridien Barbarons.
All I can say is "What a fantastic trip".
The room was spotless and the staff bent over backwards to satisfy my demanding needs.
My room was close to the spa and was very quiet and peaceful with no disturbances at all.

The food was great with the evening buffet offering a wide variety and selection of food. The beef fillet was equally as good as any I have had.
With the location right on the beach, I was able to relax from my days work with a gentle stroll along the beautiful sandy white beach in the late afternoon. Very soothing.

As a business visitor I made full use on the free wifi internet in the lobby. The speed was good with no interruptions in service. There is also a full range of plug sockets in the room to cater to plugs from UK, Europe and the U.S so no need to buy and bring adapter's for laptops etc.

“Mixed feelings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Look folks, Seychelles is incredible but extremely expensive. And your Euros dont mean much here - so if you are looking for exceptional value for money then Thailand is your place.

At about Euro 250 - 300 a night, this hotel from an International point of view is a disaster and defin not worth it. On Seychelles however, its a good mid-range option.

When you pay 300 Euros a night, and stay at a Meridien branded hotel, you do expect to feel/find value for money. Over here, you won't. They charge you for everything - and charge you a lot. If you want to use the internet for an hour - they charge you 6 Euros, for using it for 24 hours - almost 20 Euros!

What disappointed me most about this hotel was the poor customer service; most of the staff were trainees and no one really goes out of your way to make you feel welcome.

They cut corners and costs in lots of small ways - as an example, in Seychelles you are living in a tropical paradise with fresh fruit falling off the trees, but your welcome drink (and your juices for breakfast) are out of a juice box imported from Dubai. You don't feel the class in this place, and its disappointing because what a traveler looks for is to feel important, to feel appreciated, and to get a feel of a tropical paradise. The touches are lacking in a lot of ways.

The Meridien Barbarons is one of the oldest hotels in Seychelles (if not the oldest), and it was established even before Seychelles independence. It went through a renovation about 5 or 6 years ago. Location wise it is not bad, because you have a 15 minute drive into Victoria, and from there Victoria you can hit Beau Vallon and the north coast in another 10 - 15 minutes.

If I were you, I would skip this hotel and try to find an accomodation in Beau Vallon - it is the best place to stay in Mahe and is the most touristy place on the Island. You will only be about 10 minutes drive away from the charming city of Victoria and at any time during the day or night you will never feel isolated.

The problem with staying anywhere else in Mahe is that you are going to be 'stuck' - that means you will need a car to do anything outside the hotel premises. In Beau Vallon, the beach will be walking distance, and so will the numerous choices of restaurants. You will also see a lot of tourists there, but its not as if you will ever feel the place is over crowded. The beach is amazing there.

Having said all that, the number of mid-range options in Beau Vallon are limited - with the Berjaya being one option is very popular but I think if you compare it to Barbarons, then Barbarons would beat it based on the resort style feel of the place. There are a number of new hotels under-construction in Beau Vallon and other parts of Mahe, and that will definitely improve the overall quality of the accommodation and probably force places like Barbarons to step up their game.

For the time being, the Barbarons is a compromise option - its not as bad as I am making it out to be, but its not great, and I would carefully research the mid hotel options before making a decision.

Ultimately, when you are in Mahe, you want to be out and about most of the day and relax at your hotel at night - Barbarons' advantage is its size. You won't feel like you're in a dump, and its got a resort style feel to it so you won't feel cramped. You can walk the resort at night, and there is usually live music over dinner so you don't feel like the place is dead.

All in all, its an average hotel. If you stay here, make sure you have a rent a car and spend your days exploring Mahe and Victoria.

“Le Meridien Barbarons shame”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012
2

For such a top brand in the Sheraton stable to be so badly managed is such a shame. It would seem as though the Sheraton Group VP responsible for Seychelles is either totally unaware or doesn't care about the state of this well-positioned hotel resort.
On arrival at the resort our high hopes were immediately tempered as the lobby strikes one as being in dire need of maintenance attention - this is a common theme across most of the public areas of the resort. The rafters are mouldy and appear to have received a clean some time ago and maintenance the same. The lobby would otherwise be quite a lovely arrival point as it is virtually directly on the beach so there is much promise once the lacking matters are attended to.
The reception team seems to be manned by trainees who are very young and uncommunicative - as we arrived we were wordlessly whisked across the lobby to a lounge seating area which has fairly tired, unfitting furniture. We awaited some action but this came very slowly and we had to get up and go to the main desk to ask for service which was promised but not forthcoming, with no communication either. I went back a second time and requested the attention of the Front Desk Manager which was duly given. It was only from this individual that we then received some prompt service.
We were then taken to our Beach Room which was a nicely appointed room, although the wardrobe had a strong, peculiar smell. The bathroom area was recently refurbished and a pleasure to use - the toilet could do with some attention though. The walk to the room along the concrete walkway was a bit disturbing as it was in clear need of a scrub. Yes, just a scrub...
A visit to the pool restaurant yielded the same disheartening "maintenance free" state as regards higher cleanliness and furniture quality.
A very depressing aspect to this resort is that there is a strong sewage smell in the area of the resort; we noticed on one of our walks off the resort property to one of the shops that the terrible smell abated but once back on the resort property, there it was.
A New Year's eve party was put together by the hotel which was well planned and enjoyable with good music, good food and a countdown as we crossed over. Well done as regards this...
General cleanliness seems to be a problem and the staff don't seem to clean the beach much at all or effectively which is a shame as the hotel is right on the beach with a good spread of sand. We did notice that the staff do seem to enjoy their own company as they were spotted several times sitting together around a table at poolside having some fun, dressed in uniform! Amazing...
Talking about their uniform it is of a rather drab, uninspiring colour. A poor working environment coupled with a dark uniform colour resulted in us being served lunch at the lobby bar, which was quite tasty, of a sandwich and chips for which we were not charged at all. No payment requested! We are happy to pay Le Meridien for this lunch if someone there, or at Sheraton, takes this review seriously, upgrades the place and contacts me for payment of that lunch...

What a shame...

Room Tip: Rooms seem to be generally good but choose a Beach Room.
