Look folks, Seychelles is incredible but extremely expensive. And your Euros dont mean much here - so if you are looking for exceptional value for money then Thailand is your place.
At about Euro 250 - 300 a night, this hotel from an International point of view is a disaster and defin not worth it. On Seychelles however, its a good mid-range option.
When you pay 300 Euros a night, and stay at a Meridien branded hotel, you do expect to feel/find value for money. Over here, you won't. They charge you for everything - and charge you a lot. If you want to use the internet for an hour - they charge you 6 Euros, for using it for 24 hours - almost 20 Euros!
What disappointed me most about this hotel was the poor customer service; most of the staff were trainees and no one really goes out of your way to make you feel welcome.
They cut corners and costs in lots of small ways - as an example, in Seychelles you are living in a tropical paradise with fresh fruit falling off the trees, but your welcome drink (and your juices for breakfast) are out of a juice box imported from Dubai. You don't feel the class in this place, and its disappointing because what a traveler looks for is to feel important, to feel appreciated, and to get a feel of a tropical paradise. The touches are lacking in a lot of ways.
The Meridien Barbarons is one of the oldest hotels in Seychelles (if not the oldest), and it was established even before Seychelles independence. It went through a renovation about 5 or 6 years ago. Location wise it is not bad, because you have a 15 minute drive into Victoria, and from there Victoria you can hit Beau Vallon and the north coast in another 10 - 15 minutes.
If I were you, I would skip this hotel and try to find an accomodation in Beau Vallon - it is the best place to stay in Mahe and is the most touristy place on the Island. You will only be about 10 minutes drive away from the charming city of Victoria and at any time during the day or night you will never feel isolated.
The problem with staying anywhere else in Mahe is that you are going to be 'stuck' - that means you will need a car to do anything outside the hotel premises. In Beau Vallon, the beach will be walking distance, and so will the numerous choices of restaurants. You will also see a lot of tourists there, but its not as if you will ever feel the place is over crowded. The beach is amazing there.
Having said all that, the number of mid-range options in Beau Vallon are limited - with the Berjaya being one option is very popular but I think if you compare it to Barbarons, then Barbarons would beat it based on the resort style feel of the place. There are a number of new hotels under-construction in Beau Vallon and other parts of Mahe, and that will definitely improve the overall quality of the accommodation and probably force places like Barbarons to step up their game.
For the time being, the Barbarons is a compromise option - its not as bad as I am making it out to be, but its not great, and I would carefully research the mid hotel options before making a decision.
Ultimately, when you are in Mahe, you want to be out and about most of the day and relax at your hotel at night - Barbarons' advantage is its size. You won't feel like you're in a dump, and its got a resort style feel to it so you won't feel cramped. You can walk the resort at night, and there is usually live music over dinner so you don't feel like the place is dead.
All in all, its an average hotel. If you stay here, make sure you have a rent a car and spend your days exploring Mahe and Victoria.
