“it's not bad,but not that great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2008

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in two different rooms.
Our first room was big, partially cleaned (they forgot to clean some rubbish from previous customers on top of the table), with a carpet a little bit too old. Some insect and one (little) cockroch in the bathroom (but you can see huge ones in the streets near the hotel). The rest of the room was clean. One big problem for me was the bed: In that room the double bed was sagging in the middle and, the despite I slept 14 consecutive hours, I woke up with a terrible backpain. Another thing I found very unusual: Despite I gave my credit card details for booking the room, They requested my credit card as a security deposit; Because my card did't work in their machine (but it was working everywhere else) I had to give a deposit nearly double of the price of the room. So, when i check out I had to bring with me an unplanned amount of malaysian cash to the airport, and how could I get rid of this cash? I had to change it in the airport, paying also a commission.
The second room we stayed (we came back few days after) they gave us a room for smokers, which was of course smelly of cigarettes butts; And they said that was the only available (and personally I didn't believe so) and they couldn't change it.
Even say all these negative aspects I have to say that the staff was corteous and the breakfast very good.

“Worst rooms I've ever stayed in!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2008

I booked 2 standard rooms through the AsiaWebDirect site without any idea of the condition of the rooms. The only reference I had was some photos of the rooms found in the hotel website and I thought the rooms looked ok. To my horror, the rooms were way below my expectations for the price paid although it is a 3-star hotel because I have stayed in a better 3-star hotel before. I took the twin room while my parents took the double room. My experience of the room allocated to me:

1. There were small cockroaches crawling, especially around the dressing table.
2. The wooden wardrobe was falling apart and the hangers inside couldn't hold my clothes for more than 2 seconds! They kept dropping to the floor so I gave up on hanging my clothes.
3. The small fridge looked like it was at least 20 years old.
4. The carpet was stained.
5. Sofa set was the old rattan type (prob. from 20 years ago too!) and the cushion cover had faded in colour and had a faulty zip.
6. The air-conditioning was not cold at all despite putting it on 'high' mode' and there was no way of controlling the temperature in the room apart from selecting 'low', 'medium' or 'high'.

I informed housekeeping of the cockroaches but was told they have placed insecticides but the cockroaches just wouldn't go away. I asked for the insecticide spray but they did not have one. The technician was sent for the air-con but there was no difference in the temperature. I eventually got a change of room after my second call to the reception counter.

No difference in the condition of the "new" room allocated to me on the same floor except that the air-conditioning worked this time round. Both the first and second room allocated to me faced the main road which was very very noisy even late at night/early morning causing me sleepless nights throughout my stay. Somehow the windows could not keep the noise out.

My parents' double room was in a slightly better condition despite a couple of small cockroaches. In addition, the double (queen? or king sized bed?) was sinking in the centre making it uncomfortable to sleep in. As their room was not facing the road, it was much quieter.

Upon checking out, we complained about the condition of the rooms to the reception and asked if they had any plans to renovate the rooms. We were then told that they had newer, renovated rooms on the upper floors at just slightly higher prices than what we paid for the standard rooms. If only we had been told earlier, we would have had a much more comfortable stay.

While the location of the hotel is excellent (near a shopping centre, many eateries, and a train station for easy travel), the standard rooms are not to be desired for. The hotel can do with a major overhaul of its old unrenovated rooms and also a better buffet breakfast menu. Please ask the hotel for the better rooms before booking.

“Choose the premier deluxe rooms!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2007

This hotel offers 2 categories of rooms: the basic standard/superior rooms and the premier deluxe rooms. The hotel may be rated as a 3-star hotel but the basic rooms are way below that standard.
I had booked the standard room for 2 nights and I was so disappointed when I first saw the room. It was dark, old looking and had a musty smell to it. I had stayed in this hotel with my parents during the 80s and the room looks like it was stuck in that time period. The amenities were also kept to a bare minimum. The bathroom was only bearable. We stayed in this room during the first night and I remembered that I was not looking forward to going back to the room after going out for dinner. After that night, I decided to give its premier deluxe room a try.
The premier deluxe studio room was a different story altogether, and it cost me less than USD10 to upgrade. If the standard room was 1-star, the premier deluxe room was a 4-star room (for its price). It was bright, modern and clean... with much, much better amenities (oddly they did not provide complimentary newspaper, which is expected in a hotel of its class). The bed was firm and comfortable, with other furnishings stylish and new. The bathroom really nice but it came only with a shower (which was ok for me but not for some who'd like a relaxing soak).
If you are on a tight budget (under USD50) but want a nice room to stay in, give the premier deluxe room a try. Highly recommended.
Service by the hotel staff was so-so. I had asked for a light in the bathroom to be fixed but even after we left, it was still unfixed.
Complimentary buffet breakfast was given for both types of room, it was okay only, neither good nor bad, but it managed to get us filled up for the day's activities so I didn't mind.
The hotel is located near the infamous but colourful Chow Kit area (10 minutes walk away), so extra care is needed when walking about outside the hotel after dark. The plus point about the hotel's location is that it is situated near a monorail station (about 4-5 minutes walk) and a LRT station (just across the road), so independent travellers will find this convenient to explore the city. The traffic from the streets, one of which is a broad one-way street, can be a little noisy at night, and can be heard even from the 9th floor of the hotel.
What a shame about its basic rooms or I'd have given the hotel a higher rating. Hopefully the hotel will be able to upgrade all of its rooms to the premier deluxe class soon.
Would I return for the premier deluxe rooms? If my budget is under USD50, definitely.

  • Liked — Nice nice rooms for the premier deluxe room category.
  • Disliked — Poor, poor rooms for the basic standard room category.
