“bus # south 5”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

Very nice hotel. Front desk very courteous and helpful. Nearby is 7-11, coffee-shop and Family Mart across the street. Walking distance to Fushimi Inari and the trains that serve that. Bus stop 5 South stops just outside. Here's the catch. Unlike other parts of town, South 5 is the only bus going that street. No train or subway. The last train from central station south left at 9:26 p.m. or so- so don't plan on being out late in Gion unless you're going to take a taxi. We took the subway all the way to the last stop (15?) and took a taxi from there for the minimum of 575 yen. For most of the day South 5 only goes only hourly. (1/2 hour in morning). Excellent hotel, but be strategic in your daily transportation plans.

“Out of the way, but good value, clean, and affordable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It's a bit out of the way, but much more affordable than other hotels in Kyoto. The room was tiny, but again, can't expect too much for the price in Japan. All the necessities were provided, including a fridge, toothbrush, toothpaste, safe, etc. there are a ton of restaurants around, although you won't find any with English menus. We enjoyed staying in this area--it made us feel like we were seeing more than just the touristy side of Kyoto. It's about a 10-minute walk from either the JR line or the Keihan line to the hotel.

This hotel can be hard to find, so here's some directions: Take the Nara line (tracks 9 & 10) from Kyoto Station. When you come out of the train station, turn right walk until you see the tracks, cross over the tracks to the other side of the station and continue straight on that road until you hit a dead end at a pretty big road (if you walk more than 1-2 mins, you're going the wrong way). Turn left and continue walking down that road past the university on the left and right, over the big intersection, past the coffee shop/gas station on the right, and it will be on the right, across the street from a Family Mart and a bakery.

YOu can also take the Keihan line to get into Kyoto for sightseeing, which is a different station, but the directions are the same.

“Nice and Quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2011

Great place to stay if you're after the "small town" feel. Located about 10 minute walk from Fukakusa train station and 20 minute bus ride from Kyoto CBD.

Rooms were serviced daily and well equipped with fridge, kettle and free internet so bring a laptop! No microwave though. Couple of staff member were able to communicate well in english and also supplied us with a power adaptor to use while we stayed there. Staff were also hepful with travel information and you can purchase your daily bus passes at reception. Coin laundry on levels 3 and 6 were also easy to access and use.

We found most of the locals here were really friendly, though food and shopping is limited. Overall, it was a nice place to stay and a nice place to relax after sight seeing everyday.

Tips on locating the hotel: From Fukakusa train Station, take the exit on the university side. Turn left on the main road and go straight down the road for about 10 mins and you should see a Family Mart convenience store. The hotel is opposite.

“A decent hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

Not a bad hotel; generally clean, though a bit out of the way. Still, the train stations and subway aren't too far away.
