Had a great stay at this Toyoko Inn. Desk people could have been a little more friendlier, but they weren't rude either. Room was a decent price, especially for Japan. Bought the Toyoko Club Card for 1500Y (you have to pay cash) and got a 30% discount on the second day. Japanese breakfast is included. Consists of musubi, miso soup, potato salad, tsukemono, suimono, toast, coffee, and tea. Room was small, but comfortable. Wifi is included too!

Be early for breakfast! There is a mixed Japanese/Western buffet breakfast in the foyer area. Some foods do run out. The rooms are fairly cramped but clean and with TV and tea-making facilities. On the gound floor there is a coin-operated washing machine, tumbledryer and drink machine. There are also computers in the foyer. The staff do not speak much English so get brushed up by the time you reach here. We found it easy to catch buses from nearby bus stops and walked to the Gion district where there are plenty of food providers.

Business Twin room - very strange - 2 of everything (TVs, kettles, fridges). Walk in - door to bathroom right in front of you. No more than a foot from the end of the beds to the wall. No space for luggage, clothes, to sit or swing a cat. Windows overlooking a building less than 3ft away - no light! Beds as hard as rock.
All very clean though, but not a place if you intend to relax a bit after a day of activity before going out for food. We checked out and found another hotel (using this hotel's free internet).

We've stayed at several Toyoko Inn hotels across Japan and they are almost exactly the same. But for the budget traveller, they are good value, clean and mostly in very good locations. We tried to book the other Toyoko Inn closer to the Karasuma train line but it was full. My husband and I would have preferred a double room but that was full too - so we got a Business Twin, which was not a bad choice because there were 2 TVs, 2 desks, basically 2 of everything! The room is not large, but coming from Asia and having stayed at crummier hotels in Hong Kong for double the price, we were not complaining. A caucasian guest would find the room rather small and the ceiling low, but we were happy and would recommend anyone else to stay here. We are now staying at the Toyoko Inn in Osaka. You get consistency with this chain, so you know exactly what to expect, but if you want a concierge and all the frills, you won't get it here.
