“Great first ryokan experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This was our first experience with a ryokan in Japan and although we heard from other visitors that it wasn't as "authentic" an experience as a different ryokan they had stayed at in Kyoto, I thought it was a great place for a great price. We stayed in a room for 2/3 people and it was clean and incredibly spacious - only the bathroom was tiny (but this was because they encouraged you to utilize the public bath on the ground level.) Our Japanese robes were fun to wear and really comfortable. And the pillow beds?!? FANTASTIC! So comfortable, so fluffy.
I would recommend purchasing the Japanese breakfast for the experience, but from other travelers I heard the dinner wasn't worth the cost.
Overall I would highly recommend this ryokan. Centrally located and friendly staff as well.

“Best of both worlds”

Excellent accommodation combining traditional Japanese ryokan ambiance and hospitality with western mod cons such as Wi-Fi and a small but fully equipped ensuite. We (family with three kids ranging from 8 to 15) stayed one night in a large traditional family room with separate tatami sleeping quarters. We had the in house breakfast and it was excellent - very well prepared. The night meal was at local restaurant Ganko (recommended by the Ryokan staff) and was very much worth the 5 minute walk and included a Geisha dance. The area is quiet, safe and very traditional. Shame we had to leave the next morning missing out on the tea ceremony.

“Highly Recommended! Great Japanese experience and cheap!”

My husband and I stayed at the Ryokan in a traditional Japanese room it was fantastic. There was the usual great hotel service with added bonuses. We received hot green tea in our room everyday and a sweet treat of local tradition. The breakfast was traditional and if you aren't accustomed to what is suppose to happen they show you in a very foreigner friendly manner! On our way out one morning randomly we were invited to play traditional games and partake in a traditional green tea ceremony a great morning start. The staff behind the desk were very helpful, they even helped us book a hotel at the next stop along our trip as our Japanese is extremely limited. all in all everything you could as for in a traditional experience and for the price, cant go wrong!!!!

“excellent value ryokan”

Stayed for one night in this ryokan. Quiet neighborhood and pretty cheap for Kyoto. Got a very large traditional Japanese room with a separate drawing room separated by sliding screen from the bedroom. No internet access in bedrooms but accessible in the lobby. Tastefully done up. In the morning, Mrs Nishiyama treated us to an abbreviated tea ceremony. Very impressively done!

“Best Ryokan in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

This family run ryokan came recommended by Japanese friends. From my first e-mail correspondence booking our stay, I knew we'd be well taken care of. They were prompt with their replies, and when we arrived the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious (I was traveling with my husband and son), clean, and quiet. And we could adjust the room heating to our preferences (we were there in December 2011).

Our first day there, Akemi, piled the 3 of us into her car and drove us up to get permission to tour the Katsura Rikyu Imperial Villa. The gardens were breathtakingly beautiful and definitely a must see. But we probably wouldn't have gotten permission without her help. And she hosts the tea ceremony in the lobby during the day.

We opted for the Japanese breakfast plan and enjoyed all the selections (unusual and familiar). The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and you can chose a breakfast time that suits your plans. They are located within easy reach of the Kyoto Station, and are close to several train lines for sightseeing. Lots of interesting stuff within walking distance too.

Computers were available for guests in the lobby, with wi-fi for your smartphone.

When we go back to Kyoto, we'll be staying at Nishiyama Ryokan again.
