“Great place to stay in Kyoto, learn to use the buses.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This hotel is recommended by a famous travel guide and for the solo traveller it ticks all the boxes. If you arrive at Kyoto by train, exit the station so when you look to your left you will see the post office in the distance, buses in front of you and the bus ticket and info office to your right. Go to the info office and ask for the local bus map, not JR buses. Look for a bus that goes to Kawaramachi Sanjo. You will find the same number at the Kyoto station and Kawaramachi Sanjo. Jump on the bus, have 220 yen ready in coins and off you go. Ask the Japanese for help if you need it. Listen and look at the stop info on the bus as you travel. Get off at Kawaramachi Sanjo and the hotel should be on your left and a little back up the road. You should see it to the left just before the stop. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff were helpful. I didn't eat there as there were so many choices for food around the area. It is well located for buses to the Golden and Silver Temples, both must sees. Be game and use the buses. A great place to stay, especially when I got a great rate. I also asked the staff to book the Hotel Unizo for Hiroshima and it was fine as well. This helps to reduce communication booking issues by phone. Internet booking is not always easy once in Japan. Use the Hotel Unizo chain, they were great for a clean and comfortable place to sleep without ridiculous prices. Get the bus map from the Kyoto bus stop info office, that map is really useful to help you get around like a local!

“Great central location, easy to get everywhere by foot or bus”

Stayed here in June 2010 while travelling in Japan with my partner.
This hotel was a great find. Had to catch the bus there from the main Kyoto station, but was easy enough to find, right on the main street. Shops and food outlets at the doorstop and one block away from the big shopping market/plaza area.
Staff were friendly and helpful, free internet in the lobby but just one computer so you have to be quick. Facebook was disabled on it though and had to get a group of school boys to show us how to get onto facebook!
The room was small like most Japanese hotels, with the 'boat' style bathroom also. Not much room to put luggage, but for the cheap price this hotel did the trick.
The best thing is the location - really easy to get anywhere in Kyoto main area by foot, and to the outer areas where the temples and bamboo grove are.

“Great location, tiny room, but a comfortable stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

Smack in the middle of all the action, Hotel Unizo Kyoto was an excellent base camp from which to explore kyoto. Smallest room of our japan trip, but had all the amenities we needed. Beds were very comfortable, coffee shop downstairs for breakfast. One block up and two blocks over from the river and pontocho alley for great restaurants and outdoor seating.

“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2009

Pros
- Friendly staff
- Nice rooms, well equiped and comfortable
- No minibar, but there is a mini-fridge and reasonable priced vending machines serving drinks and hot meals
- Free internet via ethernet cable

Cons
- Breakfast is not included but an optional Japanese style is available, there is a cafe below the hotel that does nice and reasonable weston style breakfasts.

“Very comfortable, great value and close to shops and sights”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in December 2008. It is a business type hotel so not much of a Japanese feel, but it was very clean and convenient. Not all staff spoke English – but they did try to assist and had a good collection of tourist information in English in the lobby. We really liked the location as we were right in the middle of everything after staying in a quiet neighbourhood in Tokyo (see New Izu Hotel, Tokyo). There were lots of shops and restaurants, and a couple of convenience stores very close by. There was even a 100 Yen shop across the road which was great for cheap souvenirs.

We caught a Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto. The taxi ride from the station was about 10 mins to Unizo Hotel. We found that we walked most of the time or caught taxis. The train stations were as far away as the sights! For example you could walk to Gion, the famous food market and the Kyoto Museum from the hotel.

We had three rooms: 2 Twins and a Double. The Twin rooms seemed much bigger than the Double which was small. There were lots of options for food including Western options for our 6 year old. Please contact me if you would like more information.
