“Great hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

The only gripe i have with this hotel is that it is a bit far from the downtown part of kyoto. The western breakfast is also a bit expensive but the hotel is clean, the beds are comfortable and nice. I do wish they had free internet but felt like it was a nice space and had good western amenities like a hair dryer. One other thing that was frustrating is that there were no irons. So if you are used to american hotels that provide irons for you in the room, you need to make alternative plans and take wrinkle free items cause you may have to wait up to two days for an iron.

“Nice hotel but secluded location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2010

The hotel is very big, clean and the staff are efficient and friendly - from the little dealings we had with them (we arrived late and left early). The room was spacious and clean if a little outdated, the bathroom (as with most in Japan) was tiny but had a shower & bath tub. The only complaint I had was with the breakfast. They had 2 options, either the ground level restaurant or a 2nd option which seemed to be setup in one of the conference rooms, which we were forced to go to as the restaurant was full and had people waiting. The conference room was huge with a square buffet style station setup in the middle. Breakfast started at 7am, we arrived around 7:30am and almost everything was finished. I had to ask for various items to be restocked by the staff, of which there were very few and those available were running around frantically trying to deal with the volume. When items were restocked (ie. fruit juice, fresh fruit, bread for toast etc.) they brought out little at a time so it disappeared almost immediately - forcing you to request more and wait yet again. The food quality itself was fine but we ended up being late for our tour given the lack of availability. Other than this, a nice hotel with a clean, spacious feel. It is in a secluded area with absolutely nothing nearby so only really suitable for those stopping overnight or with transport to get around during the day.

“Great room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2010

The hotel is quite far out of town but easily reachble with the subway. The hotels looks quite new and the room is wonderfull. There's really everything you need, it is very large, the beds are bigs and confortable, the bathroom is very spacious with shower and bath (separated). The breakfast is fantastic with a huge buffet with both japanese and western offer. We paid about 100 Euros per night for a twin room on 8th floor, including breakfast.

“Ok, not the best location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2009

The Grand Prince is ok, it feels a bit like you are stepping back into the 60's. In addition, the service was so-so. At times you had to search to find staff to help you out. We stayed on the 8th floor...with rooms on the 8th floor you have access to the Royal Salon, well there isn't much to the Royal Salon beyond some couches...so definately not worth it. The hotel could use with an update. In addition, the location is not central, you are definately North of the city. No gym or pool and in addition no shuttle service. I'd recommend given the location of the hotel they would want to add a shuttle service to Kyoto Station. On the plus side, we had a really nice room on the 8th floor, quite big and very comfortable with a great view of the city. And there is a subway stop a 2 minute walk from the hotel. However there is literally nothing around the hotel so you have to get on the subway to find restaurants/shops etc. If you are going to Kyoto for vacation I'd recommend staying close to town, either near Kyoto Station or in central Kyoto.
