“Roomy hotel a welcome change”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

After a week or more of taking two hotel rooms for our family of four, Village Kyoto was a welcome change! Modern, roomy and well priced, it accomodated our family of four plus my sister, who travelled with us for week, without any problem. Coming through the door, you entered a hallway with full length wardrobes and a place for shoes. The bathroom was off to the right (in our room anyway) and a door opened from the hallway into the bright and airy main room. With tv, kettle, microwave, cups and a few other bits and pieces, the room also contained massive built in cupboards tht contained the bedding, and had room for luggage. We loved staying here, particularly after some of the miniscule hotel rooms we'd stayed in previously.

“Convenient location but unusual room design”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

This hotel is conveniently located on major bus and train / subway routes to most of the major sights in Kyoto. Dining options in the immediate vicinity are somewhat limited but there are many restaurants a short bus/train ride away. We found an excellent Indian restaurant a short walk from the hotel (ask the concierge for directions). The hotel room design is a sort of Asian / Western modern fusion with design with futons and tatami mats but we found the design to be somewhat uninspiring and the furniture provided was not very comfortable. Breakfasts are small "obento" lunch boxes brought up to the room each morning but the food quality was very average - similar to what you would expect to buy from a Japanese convenience store. The communal baths on the ground floor were pleasant and a nice way to unwind at the end of a long day of walking around Kyoto.

“Soak Away those Tired Feet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Village Kyoto for three nights during our trip in June.
We picked this hotel because we wanted to try something a bit more traditional (but not the most traditional ryokan type because we want the flexibility to try restaurants outside.)

The room is compact yet functional. We pull out the futon chairs each night and put mattress and covers on top to make our own beds. I have to give credit for the pillows provided. One side is made of buck wheat and another side is made of firm foam. You can either stack them up or use just one side according to your needs.

We also enjoy the large baths (men and women are separate) located on the G/F to soak away those tired feet. In terms of location, it is a bit far but the taxis in Kyoto are more affordable then Tokyo so at US$100/night, I think it is definitely worth it.

The front desk service is sincere and admirable, they would try their best to help you with direction and restaurant reservations. Overall, it is a great little place to stay for a short trip.

“Good family option but not very central”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

This place has some features of a ryokan (tatami rooms, communal bath) but is essentially a relatively low cost modern place. Good option for a family room and a very good communal bath room (big bath and nice washing areas). Actually I would say that the big communal bath is one of the big pluses of this place. Breakfast is normally included but I'm afraid is uninspiring. There is a laundry room which is nice to have if you object to typical hotel laundry rates. The surrounding area has little to offer except that across the road is a little private railway station where you can get ride to Arashiyama (one of Kyoto's highlights). There is also a nearby subway station which is just 2 or 3 stops away from the very centre of Kyoto.

“Avoid winter, otherwise nice hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2011

We were there in January 2011. The room was so cold that we had really difficulty to enjoy our stay.
The service was good, the room was really nice. But the undersized heating system was not efficient at all and we really suffered from the cold.
The location is not really convenient either. It is quite far from every interesting things.
The breakfast was included but the quantity was quite small.

Otherwise, we really liked sleeping in those futon.
