“Overpriced”

I think the hotel and Kaiseki are overrated. I found the food blant and of small portion. There's nothing special about the room, service and food . You are simply charged for the location, but nothing else!! In fact, the location is not exactly right, you have to cross the togetsu bridge which is always crowded (even more difficult if you walk with luggages). It's better to stay on the other side of the bridge where all the temples are.

“A delightful experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

Agree with the previous reviewer that this almost resembles a business hotel as opposed to an intimate ryokan. The ryokan is right at the end of the togetsutei bridge, and certain rooms accord great views of the bridge and the surrounding mountains/forestries. We opted for a kaiseki dinner which gave us immense pleasure, and the service was immaculate. We were somewhat disappointed that on the morning of our depature, the onsen was closed but other than this, we were very pleased with our ryokan stay here.

“Hotel and ryokan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2010

Was surprised and a little disappointed to discover this is more like a modern businessmen's hotel than your usual intimate ryokan. However, once we got over our initial shock, really enjoyed our 2 night stay. We were on the third floor in a large room and our outdoor terrace had a traditional garden with rocks and plants and an amazing view of of western Kyoto ( hills, rivers, cherry blossom trees) - quite spectacular. Paid large amounts of money for a traditional kaiseki dinner both nights, and it was the best ryokan food we had in our 2 week holiday. The staff don't speak much English, but are charming and helpful. Several business conferences while we were there ( very many slippers left at the door), and spotted a few geishas called in to entertain the businessmen. Excellent hot springs in basement floor as well. This is a great area to stay in Kyoto, peaceful, full of walking tracks and nature walks, but only 20 min from downtown.

“wonderful exprience of japan traditions and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2009

I stayed at togetsutei traditional ryokan for two nights with my husband, and it was a pleasent and relaxing experience. The area is beautiful with a river and mountain forests sceneries. I stayed at the least expensive room, though small it was very cozy and clean and included everything you might need. The ryokan staff was wonderfull, with outstanding traditional hospitality and meals! the kaiseki and shabu shabu meals were the best. they also have a really fun onsen which we enjoyed very much. My husband and I enjoyed our stay and got an amazing taste of traditional japan.

“Excellent location and kaiseki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2008

My husband and I had a most excellent stay in Togetsutei ryokan. This ryokan is situated in Arashiyama, a beautiful small suburd just in west Kyoto, a 20 minute train ride from Kyoto station. The location iof the ryokan is central, right next to the Togetsutei bridge and within easy walking distance to most sights and the rail station.
We went after the peak autumn season, but it is still pricey at 20,500 Yen per person. But we had an excellent stay - good polite service (very minimal English spoken), has an onsen (excellent for a good bath and soak after a day's out), most excellent kaiseki - beautiful artistic presentation with wonderful taste and combination of flavours. There is also a good breakfast.
We were lucky that we were there during the Hanatouro festival - illumination of the town - bridge, hills, temples and the famous bamboo groove - a very different experience from the daytime.
Will definitely return again probably during the famous autumn season to see the colours - but guess it will be much more expensive.

  • Liked — location and good food
  • Disliked — nothing, need to know some Japanese
