Was surprised and a little disappointed to discover this is more like a modern businessmen's hotel than your usual intimate ryokan. However, once we got over our initial shock, really enjoyed our 2 night stay. We were on the third floor in a large room and our outdoor terrace had a traditional garden with rocks and plants and an amazing view of of western Kyoto ( hills, rivers, cherry blossom trees) - quite spectacular. Paid large amounts of money for a traditional kaiseki dinner both nights, and it was the best ryokan food we had in our 2 week holiday. The staff don't speak much English, but are charming and helpful. Several business conferences while we were there ( very many slippers left at the door), and spotted a few geishas called in to entertain the businessmen. Excellent hot springs in basement floor as well. This is a great area to stay in Kyoto, peaceful, full of walking tracks and nature walks, but only 20 min from downtown.
