A decent hotel room and stay at MyStays Shijo. Decor is modern, bright and 'shiny'; and in keeping with MyStays colours.
This hotel is a little odd with reception not on the ground/ entrance floor. My check-in staff did not attempt to speak english with me; Not sure whether that was because I spoke japanese to him, or he was not confident in english.
Though I had booked a non-smoking room, on check-in none was available so I had to have a smoking room. This is a little frustrating. I noticed another Trip Advisor member had the same problem. Perhaps the hotel needs to have more non-smoking rooms available, especially as Japan is becoming increasingly non-smoking.
I found my single room to be of a good size. By no means the smallest hotel room in Japan. There was room for a double bed, desk area and a great leather chair (LOVED that). Would have been great to have a throw blanket available as I did get a little chilly relaxing.
The room had an air purifier in it, and by the elevator there were humidifiers available for use.
All of the hotel/ room information was provided in both japanese and english, and clearly explained how to use everything.
I'm not sure whether MyStays Shijo is a brand new (2009) building or a renovated hotel (I thought the former); but aspects (the bathroom) seemed to be older. Perhaps the hotel has a very high patronage rate, so wear and tear rate is faster? I noticed that the desk chair was very worn and the roman blind (white curtain) was quite grubby.
The two elevators were very small, and as I left at 9am they were very slow and busy.
The hotel is not really in the most convenient location. Halfway between subway/ train stations; though buses do run infront. There are a couple of small convenience stores close-by, but not so much else in the area, it's a bit of a walk to bigger shops/ restaurants etc.
