Our family of four, 2 adults and 13 and 17 year old boys were thrilled with our stay at Shiraume Ryokan. (We are a family that travels light and likes to enjoy a country for what it is. Since we come from America we try to avoid what we will find at home and rather soak up the local flavor and history.) We were apprehensive with our first trip to Japan and a stay at a ryokan rather than a hotel but were rewarded with a wonderful stay. Shiraume is located in the Gion area, which in itself has a unique, old-town feel. The inn is located along the Shirakawa Canal and a little bridge leads you to the front door and entrance. We were enthusiastically greeted by 2 or 3 women and led to our accommodations which were upstairs in the Umeichirin Room. It was quite roomy and at night, had plenty of room to accommodate the 4 of us on our futons. Adjacent were a bathroom and a room with private bath. We tried both their Kaiseki dinner and Kobe steak dinner and both were excellent. The owner, Ms Tomoko Okuda, was wonderful. She speaks very good English and therefore could point out all the new items we were introduced to at our meals and also answer any other questions we might have. She was attentive to all the plans we were making for our stay in Kyoto. When we left, after a short 2 nights, it felt like we were leaving family friends. Ms Okuda and her staff made us feel that much at home. Of our 10 nights in Japan, Shiraume Ryokan was the best.
