We stayed for a night at Hotel Monterey while spending a long weekend in the Kobe area. We selected the hotel because of its location close to Sannomiya Station, due to a late night arrival at Kobe Airport and an early morning departure to Akashi the following day.
The hotel is very convenient to Sannomiya, the main central rail station in Kobe, about a 5-10 min walk. The walk from the station can be a bit frightening at night, particularly for the uninitiated, as the location is a few steps from "Higashimon," the main bar, club, and entertainment district of Kobe. The hotel is also just a few steps from Ikuta Shrine, a local landmark.
The entrance to the hotel is hidden down a car park entrance at the end of a narrow alley/road, which can be hard to find. Compare to The b Hotel, next door, which is located directly on the main street. Check in is on the 2nd floor, 1st floor at the entrance has been converted to a creepy fake gothic church used for weddings.
The check in area and hallways are dark and a little foreboding. The hotel has apparently tried to achieve an "olde world" European atmosphere, but has failed miserably.
The rooms are adequate, if a little small. The TV consoles are ancient and the rooms have only basic amenities. Like most hotels in Japan, tooth brushes, shave sets, etc, are provided. Beds are a bit old, but did the job.
We paid 16,000 for the night (for a double), which is overpriced for this hotel. Perhaps with better facilities, less creep, more light, modern furniture, newer electronics, modern amenities (like fitness) and a more welcoming entrance, this hotel could be worth the price.
Overall, the hotel is overpriced and a poor value. Although the rooms are clean and sanitary, the overall hotel ambiance is dark and unwelcoming.
