“Nice but expensive ... just like the rest of Japan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

This is the fourth time I've been to Japan for a medical conference and this is the largest hotel I've stayed in. The rooms and bathrooms are normal-sized by western standards but fairly large for a Japanese Hotel, just for that it gets a "very good" rating for me.

The hotel is not very new, it has the smell and feel of a fairly aged hotel. But just like the rest of Japan, everything was quite clean.

The food is very good. The interesting thing with the breakfast buffet is that you're given a choice of where to have breakfast. We had breakfast on the 2nd floor restaurant on the first day and on the 30th floor restaurant on the second day. The 30th floor had the better view with fewer food choices and the 2nd floor had no view, with a wider selection of food.

The staff in the hotel (just like most Japanese) were very polite and helpful.

I would agree with the other reviews which state that its an ideal hotel if you have a meeting to attend at the near by convention center (less than 5 min walk). But it does take some effort to get to downtown Kobe. There is however a free shuttle going to and fro the Port Island and the downtown area.

The drawback of this hotel is that use of the gym and the in-door pool is not included in the hotel room fee and the fee for use of these facilities were quite exorbitant for the average Filipino travel (me). I didn't even think of using the outdoor pool since it was only around 15 degrees centigrade at noon time.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay.

“Best choise on Port Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

This is a very good hotel if your business is on the Port Island!

The hotel is clean and the amenities in the room are good. Service is very friendly and the people at reception speak good English. Internet is working well and is included to the room price.

For continental buffet breakfast I recommend to go to the restaurant on the top floor. (The view is amazing too.) Selection at the 2nd floor restaurant seemed smaller and was more of Japanese style.

There is a number of restraurants in the hotel serving dinner. The top floor Sky bar is great for drinks but I don't recommend it for dinner. Portions look great on the menu but in fact are small and not tasty at all. We once wanted to try the Teppanayki restaurant but it was fully booked (so must be good?). The little coffee shop and bakery on the ground floor is great for small bites and they have some great collection of cakes, pastries and bread rolls.

The whole Port Islands seems like a quiet place without any activity but in fact you can find lovely small restaurants hidden behind the corners. Apart from all the Japanese restaurants found there, I would also recommend "Andare a piedi" serving great (Japanese style) pasta for lunch (among other more western style dishes). I love their bakery too... http://world-business-support.co.jp/news/andare/index.html

As mentioned, if your business is on the Port Island, this is perfect hotel. I wouldn't stay here if I visited Kobe for holiday (would stay somewhere around Kobe Harbourland instead). Though, Portopia is still only about 10 minutes drive from Sannomiya city centre where all the action is, and there is free shuttle bus between the hotel and Sannomiya city! Last bus from the city returns to the hotel around 10 pm.

One funny thing I do noticed. Have been in this hotel for several times, and every time there is a note on the bed clarifying that some "rattling sound" can be heard because of a storm earlier in the morning. I know for fact there was no storm on most of the mornings I checked in, so I guess they just had the notice put on the bed to keep overseas quests calm. This rattling sound is quite frequent and I believe totally normal for buildings that engineers prepared to bend, but not break :)

“Good hotel poor location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Good hotel if you are attending a conference, choice of restaurants, coffee shop and bar, although the bar allows smoking, which was disappointing. Room spacious and beds not too hard for Japan. It is quite remote for down town restaurants, a taxi ride away. Breakfast is served on 2nd and 30th floor restaurants but was very busy with long queues at times.

If flying into Kansai it cost 22,000 JYN from the airport by taxi! The alternative is by shuttle bus, fast boat and train or taxi, which takes 40 minutes, faster than by airport taxi but in bad weather the sea can be rough.

“Good conference hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

On check-in, I insisted on a non-smoking room, and was then reluctantly given a room in the South Wing, rather than a room in the main block where I was originally booked in. It was a very spacious room, there was a sofa and coffee table, desk, separate dressing table with sink and lots of space in between. The room also had a small balcony!
The wired internet was free, but there was no free tea or coffee or complimentary bottles of water in the room, approx USD 4 for a teabag or coffee! Also, there was a charge of between USD 30-40 to enter the gym and swimming pool, depending on the time of entrance, which seemed a lot.
The downside was that it is not near the town. There is a shuttle bus direct from the hotel 3 times per hour to the main bus/train station, but the last bus back is at 9.40pm, so need to grab an early dinner if eating in town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the South Wing

“Delectable memory”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

This is a great hotel presenting sceneic beauty of Kobe and the port. Very beautifully constructed design. The best of everything is presented in the room, though most items are chargeable. The mono rail is few feet away from the hotel and teh nearest station is coonected from within. There are English speaking trained staff. The convention hall is huge and can accommodate over 2000 persons. The breakfast is excellent. The bed and room size are huge too.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the port present a good view
