This is a business hotel, smaller than some of the mammoth hotels we stayed in elsewhere in Japan, and with one single restaurant. JAL City is a chain, and we were expecting something of a budget fee to this stayl, but were pleasantly surprised. The rooms themselves were clean, modern and smart, and not a bad size for Japanese hotels. The pull-out washing line over the bath was a real boon. I disliked the fact that there was a mini-bar rather than just a fridge, with the usual overpriced drinks, and that the tea and coffee was similarly exorbitant if you chose to use it. However, the beds were outstanding. As far as I'm aware, all the rooms are twin-bedded rather than double, but each bed is (I think) 4ft wide, and the bedlinen is of excellent quality. Firm mattresses as with everywhere we stayed in Japan, but an exceptionally good night's sleep - the whole family commented on how blissfully comfortable we had all been. The rooms are a little on the dark side because the windows are actually quite small, and the policy seems to be to leave the aircon off when the room is unoccupied, which is fair enough from a green point of view. This extends to the corridors, which are not air-conditioned at all. We visited at the height of summer with temperatures up to 40 degrees, and stepping out of your room and into the corridor was like jumping into a steam bath - quite a shock, and made you grateful for the efficient aircon in the room! The restaurant had a basic but decent menu and was not too expensive in comparison to some of the hotels we stayed in - we ate there one night and enjoyed the food. The view from the rooms over the river was nice, and there's a riverside terrace area off the dining room that would probably be a very pleasant place to sit out and eat or drink in slightly cooler weather. The hotel is about a 5-minute walk from the railway station, and convenient for Hiroshima Castle and the other attractions. We were quite happy with our stay here, and would have enjoyed another night in this hotel had our timetable permitted.
