I loved this hotel. The room was understated and comfortable. There was plenty of room - not the massive room that we had at the Dragon Hotel, but ample. The decor was understated. The room was clean. Linens were soft and comfortable. Bathroom was well-equipped. And the toiletries smelled spicy --- I wish I could find this shampoo --- there was no label, only a drawing of flowers.
Some, but not all, of the staff here speaks English, but not fluently. As a result, requests or questions are sometimes met with a blank look. (Eg. Would you like your room cleaned? "that would be lovely" blank look. "Yes" big smile).
The breakfast buffet was not as diverse as others while we were in China, but the food was better.
The bell captain was especially helpful. While my husband was working, I wanted to take a taxi around West Lake. I wanted to store my luggage with him while I took the tour. (We were checking out of the Shangri-La and checking into the Dragon). Once he understood what I was asking for, he was very helpful. He even came out to the taxi when the driver was still sitting there because he could not understand what I wanted to do. The bellman was so helpful, that when I came back to pick up my luggage to move to the Dragon, he told the cab driver where I was going then, too.
When making a room request, ask for a high floor so that you can see the lake. Our room was lower, so we saw the trees around the lake rather than the lake itself.
This hotel is not as large, nor as slick and modern as the Dragon. I liked the sense of relaxed gentilit better. I would definitely stay here again.
