“Just OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

This was one of the four hotels that we stayed in during our trip to Hangzhou and Shanghai in October last year. I chose this hotel for its walking distance from the HZ train station after reading about the long waiting line for taxis. We were arriving from Shanghai in the evening.
This hotel may have been one of the glorious ones in HZ in the early days. The room has been kept under acceptable conditions. It has a generous room size, super king bed, two bottles of drinking water and the other usual amenities like shampoo, soap etc. The lightings are not sufficient for the large room so the room appears a bit dark.
The popular He Fang Jie is walkable from the hotel, but crossing the roads and traffic junctions and walking on the narrow and not so well-lit footpath is a little difficult. We should have brought a torchlight with us.
We booked through Zuji Australia which advertised rate was A$75, minus a A$20 voucher that I had from an earlier air-booking, resulting in a low net rate of A$55 for our one-night stay. We saw a few other hotels in the area which could be better but for higher cost I guess.

Room Tip: Bring a torch light if you plan to walk to He Fang Jie

“Second visit, first impressions not quite right”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

When you walk into the lobby of this hotel, it's hard not to be impressed. Hotels in China seem to be built on purpose to impress on first glance. The rooms are another matter. The first time I stayed here, the 8th floor room was in need of a bit of cleaning and thoroughly deserved a 3 star rating. However, the second visit a short time later gave a different impression.
This time I requested a quiet room and was sent to a higher floor. The room on that floor was just plain dirty. The carpet had obviously not been cleaned since it was installed, the curtains torn, plenty of mould in the bath tub area and walls that needed washing. Stray hairs here and there competed the impression of a neglected property; the sort of place that the tourism industry loves to 'milk' because of it's location.
No doubt the owner(s) intend to tear it down and build anew which seems to be a policy in China - re-building is apparently preferred to maintenance or refurbishing.
The one good thing about this place is the food service which is very good. The selection at breakfast is appealing to multi-national tastes, but get there early, as stocks are not refilled, when it's gone, it's gone. Yoghurt is usually available if you don't see it.

Room Tip: You could try asking for a clean room, but they might not understand.

“Convenient hotel if taking the train”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Found this hotel thru Agoda and rate was attractive. For the price I paid, this hotel exceeded my expectation. Arriving from Shanghai via high speed train, you just walk 5 minutes and you are in the hotel. Room is standard in size, clean and with the basic amenities. Yes, it is old and outdated, but it seems management has maintained the hotel quite well. This hotel would be good for business travelers, your Chinese host will not miss you since from the train station you can go to the hotel and check in, then meet your host in the hotel lobby. But if you in Hangzhou for the scenery and West Lake, there are lots of hotels within the lake area.

Room Tip: If you are in a budget, take your meals in the train station where there are lots of fastfood restau...

“Average experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Stayed here two nights as part of a 24 day trip around China. It appears to be an older hotel in need of refurbishment. Rooms were dark in colour with minimal lighting and appeared drab. Hard beds. Breakfast was acceptable. Free wifi in lobby. View from window was of large office block opposite. Various stains on carpet and moldy bathroom made it feel unclean. It was a five minute walk from the station (exit station on left hand side) with a large selection of shops around the station. About a thirty minute walk from West Lake and the various high quality shopping areas. Interesting city with plenty to see and do.

“Found a dead mice in the room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011 via mobile

I stayed here for a two day mini-vacation in Hangzhou, not only did the front desk totally ruin and mess up my reservation, once i got to my room, the ventilation was horrible in the washroom, smell of feces, and to my shock, there was a small mice near the mini- table.
