“Much more than expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

What sets this hotel apart from the other 5 start hotels in Hangzhou is the service and team. From the warm hospitality and recommendations from the General Manager to the concierge and staff at the restaurant, everything was much more than expected. Thanks to the GM's recommendation, we stopped in a water village (Wuzhen) on the way back to Shanghai and had a most memorable experience as if we were in Venice but with Chinese architecture, food and language spoken. The location of the resort (by the wetlands) is also very peaceful and quiet. A great base to visit the beauty of Hangzhou (which is much more than just Westlake) and easily accessible by taxi.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us your comments.

We are happy that we managed tom exceed your expectations. I am especially pleased to know that it was the staff that made the difference for you.

The Wetlands area makes our setting special as we are in a tranquil environment of a busy city, with yet easy access to the Downtown areas and Westlake.

We do hope to be of service to you again soon so that we may show you even further improved services.

Warm regards,

Pascal Eppink

“Excellent Hotel”

Stayed here for three nights in a premier suite --- fabulous room, great service and a beautiful setting. Overall I have nothing bad to say - we had a slight mishap over train ticket bookings however this was immediately rectified otherwise our stay was perfect.

Its a little far out from westlake but only 15 mins in a taxi as long as you are not travelling during rush hour - its a nice haven to come back to.

The hotel was very quiet when we were there which was excellent. Hangzhou is a great place to visit for two to three days - we like the quiet of the winter but i suspect during the summer its madness around westlake!

Well done Banyan Tree for an excellent product at good value for money :)

Dear Kieran 11,

Thank you for your comments and we are pleased to see that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us.

Every season has its own unique settings in Hangzhou, which makes it a very attractive destination all year round. The Westlake area is indeed more busy in the summer months, but our Concierge team will be happy to assist and suggest you the best timings to visit.

We hope to be able to welcome back again in the near future, so you may experience the many services we have on offer

Warm regards,

Pascal Eppink

“Unfinished product, inaccessible, worst banyan tree”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011 via mobile

We had enjoyed multiple banyan tree properties around the world, but this one disappointed.

1. Location is easily 30 min from anywhere. Without a shuttle or easy means to get a taxi, you only option is the hotel car. This starts at usd35.

2. The resort looks unfinished. It sits on a larger site still unconstruction. Within the property, signs on minor works are still visible.

3. Subpar spa. Aircon broke down. Steam room smells rancid.

4. Food. Banyan Tree is famous for it's breakfast. Not so here. Tim Sums are hit and miss. Flies abound. To be fair, dinner was nice.

I think the most disappointing thing was perhaps the reaction of the general manager Desmond Tan when we wrote a personal letter to him. He just smiled and said we will try to do better next time. Not nearly good enough, mr. Tan.

Dear TravelAllDay2011,

Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding your stay in Banyan Tree Hangzhou.

Please accept my apology for the disappointment you have experienced. We continuously strive to improve our product and services based on feedback such as yours.

It is indeed disheartening to know our product and service was not up to your expectations especially your comment on the quality of food served during breakfast and the ongoing construction work nearby. The entire Westbrook compound is scheduled to be completed by 1st Oct 2011. Once the other resorts start operation, the taxi frequency will increase and we are also reviewing in providing shuttle services for our guests to downtown & key tourists’ attractions.

Your comments on the food quality and spa hardware issue have been raised to our F&B Manager and Spa Manager for their review and to look into ways for improvement.

I apologize on the misunderstanding of our encounter. Please allow me to explain that your letter has been shared with our management team during the morning briefing and I wanted to meet you personally during breakfast at Water Light Court. However as you were having breakfast with Ms Josephine, I do not want to disturb you too much, which resulted in our short conversation to convey the message.

With the knowledge of your itinerary for that day, I had informed my colleague to ensure that taxi to be arranged for departure on time and to extend a late checkout as you will be leaving at about 1345hrs. I am really sorry that my approached did not meet your expectation.

Thank you once again for bringing your experience to our attention and please accept my apology for not handling your disappointment well.

Kind Regards,

Desmond Tan

“would not come back...bit dissapointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

First impression were a bit disappointing. Perhaps expectations were a bit high. But I would not go back again. Keep in mind, this is reference to this being a 5 star hotel charging 5 star prices.

The check in was ok and the staff very friendly but not overly efficient. Their attitude was great but they just had not been trained properly.

In terms of hardware, the lobby was OK but the materials were not great and to be honest just not 5 star. This theme extended into the rooms, where the wood and veneer was generally quite cheap, as were the hallways. The general ambiance felt as if the investor/mgt were trying to save money.

Food was great but it was ridiculous how small the Chinese restaurant was. Again, service and food were good but the place just was not planned nor designed well.

In summary – Hangzhou still does not seem to have any really nice 5 star inernational resorts. Looking forward to trying the Four Seasons.

PROS: quite close to SH
CONS: Too many corners cut, not worth it for the price.

“A peaceful stay away from the hustle and bustle of WestLake.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

We just came back from Hangzhou recently. We were there for 5 nights and stayed 3 nights in Hyatt and 3 nights in Banyan Tree. I have posted a separate review on Hyatt.

Banyan Tree is on the western part of Hangzhou, a good 30-45 mins from West Lake. The grounds of Banyan Tree is beautiful as usual. But my husband commented that he still prefer the setting at Banyan Tree at Lijiang which was more attractive and cheerful when compared to the hotel in Hangzhou. I think it is due to the dull colours of the typical Jiangnan architectural style of the building. The grounds at Banyan Tree Hangzhou are nonetheless peaceful and much welcomed after the hustle and bustle of WestLake.

The Room - we stayed at a premier water terrace. It was beautiful and extremely spacious. It had a good size living room, bedroom with an in-room bathtub, a huge bathroom with separate shower and WC and a wooden Chinese bathtub, and finally it even had an in-room massage room. Unfortunately the in room massage room has one bed only, so we did not use it and went to the spa instead which had a massage room that could accomodate both of us at the same time. And of course, there was a balcony that looked into the beautiful grounds. The room was clean, well made up always.

The Restaurants - We had breakfast daily at the Waterlight Court. No complains here. Good dim sum and congee and western breakfast choices. Freshly squeezed fruit juices. On one of the days, I commented that the dim sum was not fresh. The waitress immediately alerted the chef who did a personal taste test of the rest of the dim sum at the counter.

We had a western set dinner at the Waterlight Court as well. Excellent food. The dinner was part of our room package. I had expected a simple set dinner, but no such thing! We were given a private room, and had a 6 course set dinner, which came with appetiser (salmon), soup (lobster bisque), first main course (king prawns), second main course (wagyu beef steak), dessert and coffee/tea. Service was also excellent.

Tea at Jiu Xian was included in our package too. Again, not just simple tea and sandwiches. It was the complete elaborate tea set that they were serving for paying guests. It came with cakes, cookies, fruits, sandwiches and coffee or tea.

After our heavy tea, we had a simple a-la-carte dinner at the Chinese restaurant, Bai Yun the second night. Food was also good. We had rice with stir fried ladies fingers, roasted pigeon and a well known local dish, Westlake Vinegar Fish. The food was good as well.

The Spa - We had 2 spa treatments each on the 2 days that we were there. The first day, we each tried the oriental bath (with scrub) followed by massage (Island dew for me and Swedish for my husband. They were great. We felt so pampered and ambience was wonderful. So we went back the second day for the summer promotion yoga massage with essential oil bath. The yoga massage was essentially like Thai massage. A lot of stretching and makes one feel very relaxed after the treatment. We had a wonderful time at the spa.

The conceirge/tour desk was very helpful in giving us directions to Xixi Wetland and suggesting what to do and how to go about the place and what to see without pressure of us having to use their tour services.

To be fair, the price we paid for the 2 nights Romantic Hangzhou package at Banyan Tree was way more expensive then the room we paid for at Hyatt. But the quality is also different. While we will still stay at Hyatt for sightseeing around Hangzhou and Hyatt will be a great place for a good night sleep, we will choose Banyan Tree if it is to relax and to pamper ourselves.

All-in-all, we were happy that we decided to spend the last 2 nights of our short vacation in Banyan Tree. It was a great relaxing end to otherwise hectic sightseeing in Hangzhou in the hot and humid summer. In particular, I must say that I am impressed that meals provided as part of the package was of good quality. They did not just give inferior or low quality set meals just because they are part of a package. So again, Banyan Tree did not disappoint and we will definitely consider Banyan Tree again when the next opportunity arise.
