We started our 4 week tour of China in Kunming and stayed at the Hai Kun on 2 occasions - for 1 night when we first arrived, and for 1 night after we had travelled through Kunnan province for a week.
The Hai Kun is a good, but not great, hotel.
The good - centrally located, clean, room is spacious, beds are good, free internet access (if you go to the business centre and ask nicely)
The average - reception staff were friendly, but did not speak any English.
The not so good - the breakfast is very much aimed at the Chinese visitor. There wasn't very much to tempt a Western tourist.
The bad - our non-smoking room was definitely smoky. We asked for a change in room immediately and they obliged.
