I am really surprised to read so many negative reviews of this hotel. It may be that the hotel has moved in the past few years as the original 1950s style Kunming Hotel is now the Thai Embassy next door. This would easily be a 4 star western standard hotel and at about 350RMB for a fantastic room it is great value. Spotlessly clean and 10-15 mins walk to downtown its well positioned. Many staff speak english which is great.
The two downfalls were both in the Tour office:
1. We went to visit the tour office at 8.00PM as its open 8.00AM -9.00PM but it was closed one hour early, the next morning we turned up at 8.00AM to book our tour to the stone forest to be told the tour left at 7.30 being 1/2 hour before they opened.
2. We wanted to experience the 8 hour train ride to Lijiang and were quoted 1050 RMB each which sounded expensive. I asked for a second person who spoke better english to confirm. She came in and said 1050 for a seat or 1850 for a sleeper. We went to the train station and bought exactly the same class of seat for 90RMB each. This is a blatant rip off.

Arriving late on my final nite in China after 3 rough weeks of travel, I wanted a shower that didn't flood the bathroom, cold beer and a warm bed. I got all the above and a pretty good breakfast in the am, as well. The hotel is obviously geared for Chinese business travelers, so a gringo felt a bit alien (English was a rare commodity). There was a convention of police at the time, which did add a sense of security ;-)

And you could tell, It looked like it all needed a good clean, the rooms were ok, but the beds were very uncomfortable.

Breakfast was good, there was a lot of choice, and staff were friendly enough.

The rooms were okay, the Air conditioner/heater controls are a bit "iffy". The picture quality on TV was a bit "fuzzy".
The free buffet breakfast was not great. The toast, eggs and baked beans were okay as was the coffee.
Some of the front office staff spoke a bit of English. There is a Travel agent in the building, but I recommend going down Dong Feng Road to the CAMELLIA Hotel to book tours. (Out the front gate and turn left)
