“Excellent personal touch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

I was in kunming on business trip with a few associates. We arrived at different time and I was the second to arrive, early in the morning at 7.00am. To my surprise, the General Manager ,Mr. Jim Khoo , received me personally . He was waiting at the lobby when I arrived and he was warm and sincere and even informed me that my colleague had arrived safely the night before. In my 15 years of travelling on business, I cannot recall any GM receiving us/me personally and paying so much attention to details. The Director of Rooms , Mr. Kelvin How, was there too and personally assisted me in checking in and briefing me of the room arrangement as requested prior to our trip. He made sure that I was happy with the arrangement before I even checked in.

When we met in the lobby to plan for lunch , the GM, Mr. Jim Khoo and his Manager Mr. Tony, happened to be there. One of us was having a cough. Mr. Jim Khoo immediately showed his concern and asked some questions pertaining to the cough; afterwhich he suggested that perhaps a bowl of hot green beans soup could help alleviate cough. My associate was touched and agreed to try this remedy. Mr. Tony immediately ordered the hotel's cook to prepare a bowl of green beans soup to be done and sent to my associate's room at a 5 pm , the time comfortable to my associate.

I am really impressed with their attention to details and they showed excellent personal touch through action, which made our stay so comfortable .

Room Tip: Send an email request to the Hotel prior to travelling.

“Polite and attentive staffs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

The staffs are helpful and attentive. I once ordered some food at the cafe and when i realised that there was a chinese restaurant next door, the staff very kindly offered to cancel my order voluntarily.
Our lunch was served promptly and with attentive services despite our tight schedule.
The rooms are tidy and clean but certainly not what you would expect of crowne plaza standard.

“yuck! Crowne Plaza has a lot of work to do!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

OK, so in all fairness, this hotel (formerly Bank Hotel) has just been taken over by Crowne Plaza, but do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else! the only thing that was ok was their airport pick up service ( arrived very late at night with 2 young kids).

Had booked 2 non -smoking rooms, interconnecting if possible, or at least adjacent. Were given 2 rooms on a smoking floor, about 50 meters apart with an elevator shaft in between.

Rooms were grimy and dirty. 2 bottles of complimentary water, but nothing in the minibar. However, condoms in the bedside table drawer, with most traffic in the corridors accordingly (I am no prude but this was blatantly obvious). Bathroom needed a serious scrub and joints etc were black with mould. As for the curtains and carpet in the room, in doubt they had ever been cleaned.

Breakfast was a greasy, sad, sorry affair. Again, dirty, stained tablecloths, pre packaged airline pastries, flavorless coffee ( dirty dish water more like). Warm juice, not even a mantou nor decent pot of green tea in sight. I recall we ate tea boiled eggs and dragon fruit and surrended. Everything else ( congee, fried noodles etc) was swimming with oil and looked as it had been there for at least 48 hours.

And beware, on check out, they tried to make us pay for rooms that had been prepaid !

Would stay anywhere else again, other than here!

“cockroach, pubic hair, rip off”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2011

Lots of things wrong during our stay. First, we arrived early in the AM off a train. We were told that in order to check in early that we would have to pay a full night's stay, or that we could wait 2 more hours and check in with our current reservation. We of course decided to wait in the lobby. After an hr another front desk person allowed us to check in. I understand hotel check-in policies, but I know they weren't sold out and that our room was available.

Relieved to be able to get to our room I hurriedly jumped into bed. My partner yelled from the bathroom to not walk in the bathroom w/o slippers. Apparently there were pubic hairs (not ours) on the floor. When my partner came out of the bathroom she started screeching and pointing. Turns out I overlooked a giant cockroach laying on the bed. It must have been folded under the covers which is why I didn't initially see it.

From then on we began inspecting in and around the bed before settling. No more roaches thank goodness, but I found sunflower seed shells all around the bed. When I looked under the bed it was even worse - a collection of items for years from previous guests. Dust, kids' socks, old snacks, wrappers, among countless other things. Gross.

The customer service was trite, didn't seem they wanted to help since we didn't speak Chinese. The only time we received a warm reception was when I tried to book a tour and they found an opportunity to rip us off. The hotel advertised that they offered tour service with direct pickup from the hotel. Unfortunately this wasn't available during our stay, but they offered to help arrange for other services. They quoted a high price and asked for the total sum, which my partner and I tried to politely decline. The receptionist proceeded to decrease the "required" deposit more and more each time we tried to leave.

No wifi in the room, no pool - falsely advertised on their website.

The location is good, breakfast had a lot of options, looks of the hotel is very nice, the room appeared nice w/o a closer look- but the cons outweighed the pros for us. I would not stay here again.
