Stayed for 2 nights in Nov 08 as part of a tour package. The room that came with the tour was a "standard room" - it was terrible. Filthy, filthy carpets and bathroom. I'm normally fairly accomodating in terms of lower standards for hotel rooms (especially in China) but this was bad. Very smoky smell in the room, hallway very smoky as well, despite our floor being a "non-smoking floor" -- so many people disregard these rules and the hotel does nothing to enforce. When we complained of the smell, the hotel came up and sprayed the room with air freshener, which made it worse.
After a few hours in the room, members of our tour group decided we'd all had enough, and worked with our tour guide and the front desk to arrange an upgrade (as we'd seen nicer rooms as we walked down the halls). We paid 200 yuan (about USD25) a night more per room and were upgraded to newly renovated rooms on the 8th floor that were much nicer.
So - the first rooms totally did not live up to the 4 star billing - they were barely 2 stars. The newly renovated rooms (same size, configuration, etc, just a lot newer) were more like 3.5 star rooms. When checking in, push to be on the 8th floor!
Breakfast in the hotel was fine - moderate selection (not as much as we saw in hotels in other cities in China) of Western and Chinese dishes and the orange juice is a TANG-like mixture, not fresh OJ.
We did enjoy walking down to the mutlilevel department store a block away from the hotel one evening when we had nothing to do.
