Thanks to everyone who posted here. Once again, Trip Advisor proves invaluable. And, taken as a whole, the posts are right on the money. Purchasing my stay at the Grand Noble as part of a domestic China package on ctrip proved to be a bargain I could not refuse. If other five-star hotels (Like the Sofitel or Shangri La) have similar rates to the GN, you should take them, no question. The GN is a five-star hotel with three-star service. First sign: their poor web site, which was slow to respond and where several functions (including e-mailing the hotels and their frequent stay program) didn’t work at all.
Actually, the service here is all over the map, a sure sign of poor management. Some of the employees are very nice and very helpful. Others belong in civil service jobs. Was I greeted with a smile and a welcome? No. Employees’ English ability is also all over the map. Some refuse to try to understand even simple, one-word requests, like “Reception?”, throwing up their hands and exclaiming “no” in Chinese. Others are very helpful. Jack, one of the concierges, is excellent and one of the young bellmen speaks close to perfect English.
While it is true the beds are hard, a pillowtop ameliorates the stiffness somewhat. With the puzzling exception of no drawers whatsoever, my room was clean, modern and well-equipped, including hair dryer, robe, slippers, flat-screen TV, refrigerator mini bar, etc. Two complimentary bottles of water are furnished each day. English language papers have to be requested if you want them sent to your room or they are available at the concierge desk.
Restaurant food is okay. Their buffet serves three meals including a good breakfast. (The Sofitel buffet is more expensive but also far superior.) The location is excellent, right on East Street, a major shopping street, and only a few blocks east of the Bell Tower. My stay here was a great deal and, if the price is right, I recommend the Grand Noble heartily, with the caveats noted by me and others.
