Very elegant hotel on hill over the town of Sochi: steeped in history: the first astronaut (Russian, of course) -Yuri Gagarin- stayed here after his historic flight. Sochi itself is no St Tropez (but more real than such places, at least before the Olympic hordes descend). Russian families enjoying the sun and the fun-fairs and walking the boardwalk. Sochi/Adler has a small, chaotic airport, but you can organize hotel transfers (BMW 7-Series) with the hotel- expensive, but it is a good distance and worth it to be looked after, especially if your Russian is poor. Staff very considerate and keen to showcase their hotel and Russian hospitality. Guests mainly political types and well-heeled Russians. Very beautiful spa in spacious tropical grounds where I had the best massage of my life: not the typical Western 'pit-pat'- more like a workout than a massage as we know it. Worth the trip for the massage alone. Huge indoor pol, with banya and Finnish sauna- excellent spa with full range of Sothy beauty treatments. Private pebble beach with loungers/umbrellas and a beachside cafe- I saw a dolphin diving off the veranda. Sophisticated bar and library room, old-fashioned billiards room and cinema room you can rent out. Lovely outdoor pool and wonderful concrete-chic elevator down to the beach.
Rooms lovely and a good size with terraces. Good food (you can try the Russian menu or more Western affair).
All in all, a discreet and elegant affair and a place you dont want to leave.
