“Fantastic location, great price for St Petersburg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We arrived into St Petersburg on the overnight train from Moscow so were far too early to check-in. The staff were happy to hold our luggage for us while we found something to occupy our time for a few hours. Within 2 minutes of walking we stumbled into The Hermitage.
We checked-in after lunch with no hassles.
The room was spacious and clean. Only down sides to the room itself was that there was no free WiFi in the rooms (was available in lobby and skybar), the TV occasionally would just stop working, and the temperature in the room became so high that we had to sometimes open the window (in early January - the heart of winter) just to make the room a comfortable temperature and to sleep. There was a climate control panel but it didn't seem to do much. Also, the heated floor in the bathroom was great at times, but sometimes too hot to stand in one place for more than a few seconds.
We didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that, but we ate at the restaurant for dinner twice and were really happy with the food and service on both occasions. Drinks were a bit expensive, but no more so than most good restaurants in the city, and not as expensive as the fancy bars.
We enjoyed SkyBar. Again, the drinks weren't cheap, but weren't that expensive when compared to other places. The bar is enjoyable to relax in, well set up, and even has board games and sport on TV.
On our day of check-out we were leaving late and again they were happy to look after our luggage for us until we were ready to leave. We also loved the big fish tank in the lobby bar, it was very relaxing to look at while we waited for our departure time.
Overall we found it an enjoyable place to stay and a nice way to end our trip.

Thank you for your feedback!
We pay respect to all our guest’s wishes for better work and improving all services.
We are happy to hear that check-in and check-out were done efficiently for you.
Wi-Fi Internet really is not included in the rate, as not all guests need it. By having separate charge for extra services we keep our room rates affordable for more guests.

However all guests can use Wi-Fi free of charge in hotel’s lobby and bars.

Thank you for positive words about our restaurant and sky-bar!
We are happy that in general you liked staying in the hotel and we will be happy to see you again in the future!

Dear Luise,
Thank you for your positive comment!
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed staying at our hotel. We always do our best to make our guests feel comfortable.
Another positive side of Petro Palace location is new metro (subway) station Admiralteyskaya opened recently in just 200 meters from us.
Hope to see you again in PetroPalace some time!

“If this is a #40 Hotel then what of the other St Petersburg Hotels!?”

The Good:

* Well located hotel, one of the best located in the city, walking distance to everywhere. We stayed 5 days and didn't use the metro once (consider it was -5 and snowing!).

* Clean, large rooms with good turndown service.

* Price - we paid €300 for 5 nights via Compare-Hotels.co

The Bad

* The Sky Bar - really overpriced drinks served by the most miserable teenager ever.
* The Hotel Restaurant - lame food, lame service and a terrible cabaret.

The Ugly:

* Doormen who don't open the door but just watch you with slight disdain.
* Coffee and breakfast is absolutely rank. Skip it. Don't pay for Breakfast and go across the road to any of the cafes which are cheap and better.
* The "gym" consists of machines that even on their weakest settings would challenge even fit women! The pool is an ice dip and so small you'll never "swim" in it. Try the Neva rather than this pool, touch warmer!

In Conclusion:
If you don't need any facilities and need a comfortable base to carry out your trip, this is perfect. Don't use the bar/restaurant/gym and don't ever expect a smile from any of the staff.

Thank you for your comment!

Your opinion is really important for us.
Our restaurant is is used to be a quite popular place among tourists so we are really sorry that you didn’t like it. We will consider additional training for waiters to improve it.
We will take into account your comment about breakfast. Sometimes we change the menu trying to find the best way to satisfy all our guests’ wishes. We will review the menu again to make it attractive for all guests.
Our gym and pool are of standard dimensions/equipment for a 4 star hotel. Taking into account that Petro Palace occupies a historical 19th century building, which is part of UNESCO world heritage area, it is clear how restricted we were while planning and constructing our gym and pool. So they are additional facilities and definitely not comparable with Olympic-size pools and fully-equipped professional gyms.

We always work to improve our service, so your comments are greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you again in Petro Palace!

“Fawlty Towers”

This may be one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. We booked the Petro Palace because of the location, star rating and gym. Ignore all of the above except the faultless location. We arrived earlier than check in time and asked whether it was possible to check in early, we had experienced this in other Hotels during our trip and were offered a room immediately. The Petro Palace responded to our request as though we had asked to borrow their underwear. They initially couldn't confirm our booking rate even though we had a print out of our hotel voucher confirmation with payment details. The receptionist then offrered us an early check in after checking our room was available and much consultation with colleagues for half the nightly rate. As we were only two hours early we declined their offer and decamped to a lovely local cafe. This was been a taste of things to come! When we finally cheched in, the alleged four star hotel was more reminescent of a nasty travel tavern with cheap furniture. The room was clean and that is the best I can honestly say about it. The real treat however came at breakfast, or 'Coffeegate' as it became known. The breakfast buffet was acceptable but there were lots of staff standing around with no real purpose apart from apparently keeping guests away from their morning coffee. After much hunting for aforementioned coffee it was offered but ant attemtps at refills were blocked. The coffee 'monitor' was absent for most of the breakfast shift but any attempts by any guest to help themselves to a refill resulted in previously absent staff appearing and attempting to wrestle the coffee pot away from the caffiene starved guest. The highlight of the morning was watching a hugely irate German lady squaring up to the clearly untrained staff, for the whole three mornings we were there. The gym, which we may have stupidly assumed was free given the star rating wasn't although no one was using it. The pool was freezing and the size of a postage stamp. It was a rubbish hotel.

First of all thank you for your comment!

Please accept our appologies for inconvenience caused!

According to hotel’s rules there really is a charge for early check-in. The same policy exists in majority of hotels in our city. Surely if guest arrives up to one hour before check-in time (14:00) and we have rooms ready - we provide room free of charge. For arrivals earlier than 2 hours prior to regular check-in time there really is a fee of 50% of room rate. This policy also exists in majority of hotels in the city.
As check-out time is 12:00 (noon), and maids need at least some time to clean-up rooms and make them ready for next guests it also can happen that we do not have any clean rooms available before 14:00 (official check-in time). Maybe that was the case. Usually guests leave luggage with us and return when rooms are ready.

We really plan rooms renovation for this year. So hopefully our rooms will have better design and furniture after it.

There are also De-Luxe rooms having higher-class furniture and equipment available.

Thank you for note about your negative impression of breakfast service and the fitness center! We have already planned some additional trainings for our staff members.

This is important to know our guest’s opinion for better hotel's performance.

We hope you to come to Petro Palace Hotel again and find everything much better next time!

“Excellent location but extra charge for everything!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

It was commented enough about perfect location of the hotel. The rooms are also quite comfortable. Basically that's all I enjoyed there. The breakfast consisted of a sandwich from a supermarket and a cup of coffee or tea. Internet is available at the rooms only at extra fee (around 15 EUR per day), the gym and the swimming pool are small and inconvinient (also you have to pay additionally for them), the jacuzi was out of order during the whole week I stayed there. The laundry was done awfully. In addition the walls are so thin that you can hear your neighbour clicking the lights switch.

Dear Mikhail,

We highly appreciate your opinion about our hotel, we’re doing our best every day to become better!

There really are extra charges for some additional services that are not used by all guests. By this we keep our room rates affordable for all guests. Including extra services in room rates means encreasing them, as there really are costs behind every service.

However we are thinking of including at least use of fitness center into room rates for future.

We will be glad to see you again in our hotel!
