“Grand old hotel showing signs of age”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

The most impressive part of the hotel is the imposing lobby, with it's acres of space and massive check-in desk, all marble with metallic sculptures.

The guys in the luggage storage room could not be more helpful. The way they ignored guests, allowed items to be installed or removed from the room without checks, whilst gratuitously studying the newspaper was pure comedy. The women on the check-in desk made a pretence of being cold as ice, but when pressed for information, were ultimately almost glad to assist.

The rooms are dated (hard to really know what is dated, what is simply new-but-dated-looking in the old Soviet lands). Yes there can be a walk to the rooms from the lift. So what? The bath water runs a little brown with rust. Well, I hope it's rust.

The location is fine. Not central, but in a neighbourhood with lots of things, and right next door to the metro, a couple of stops from the city centre.

The breakfast is really not worth getting up for. They hardly make an effort, and this includes the washing-up. Look through the plates for a clean one, then put some tastless stuff on it, and wash it down with Nescafe coffee from a self-serve machine. There was a huge stuffed brown bear overseeing proceedings, his final indignity to be squeezed uncomfortably into a porter's red uniform. Nothing like taxidermy to prepare a diner for canned fruit.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a river view because watching ice flowing downstream is always interesting.

“First time in St. Petersburg”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

This was the first time I visited St. Petersburg and have really no experience about other hotels in this region which makes it a bit difficult to say whether this is a good or a bad hotel in this city. The hotel is nicely located as you can visit the shops and restaurants in Nevskiy Prospekt easily. The reception area of the hotel is huge and quite impressive but the reception staff is not really as friendly as you would normally see in a hotel. The hotel is according to my understanding a non-smoking hotel but still the room i stayed in smelled quite a lot of cigarettes and I had to wash all my clothes when I got back home. The rooms where my colleagues stayed did not have this problem though. In my room there was a single bed which was average in quality. There was some noise coming from outside that woke me up quite early in the morning. Otherwise it was quiet during the night. Breakfast was very simple and could not be really compared to other hotels with the same star rating at least in Europe. Price was very decent so actually taking into concideration the location the price made the hotel worth it even with the slight dissapointments that I have mentioned here. The room had a safe which was good even though I have to say that I had no feelings that my belongings would not be safe even without it. If I would visit St. Petersburg again I would probably still go to this hotel due to the location and reasonable price.

“do not step one foot inside.”

we are a couple ( 2 doctors ) from cairo, egypt. we visited st petersburg in july 2011 ( a charming city ). the hotel location is good, ( if you get a room over looking the river, it is a lovely view ). staff in the reception have no idea about " how to treat tourists ", very slow, very unprofessional, never smile, and if you think you can get any information about any thing from them - sorry - you are wasting your time... breakfast is very poor, if you ask the waitress to change the dirty table cloth, you will be looked at as if you come from another planet. the room has very modest furniture, "not clean",.. bath room toilet paper is something that you may "see"!! but " please do not "use"!!!. the distance from lift to rooms is extremely long "needs a taxi". in brief, please think many many times before you step one foot in side moscow hotel st petersburg. you will regret it. ( Dr/ R.G & Dr/ W.H )

Room Tip: rooms over looking the river

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Stayed here in 2006 and just now getting to a review. Very large but easy to get around in. The food was good at the buffet and the rooms were adiquate with a full bath (step in shower in tub). The hotel is right on the river and had great black out curtains for the sun light that lasts for 20 + hours at this time of year. There were a few English chanels on the tv. There is a subway station right next to the hotel and a cathedral acroww he street that is a must visit. There is so much to see in St. Petersburg you may not be in the room much except to sleep.

“You should avoid this hotel”

Good: near to metro station, abundant hot water (don't laugh, it's not always true in russian hotels)
Bad: outdated furnitured, long long tiring corridor, unprofessional service (the receptionist took 3 hours to check me in), poor breakfast

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the lift
