It has changed over the years (not for the better), but it is still a sympathic, comfortable, little, friendly and safe hotel with quiet guests in a quiet part of the city, not far from the centre (easy to be reached by the hotel bus (free), or by a marsroutka/minitaxi (cheap). Alas the good restaurant has closed for dinner a year ago and a lot of the former staff has gone after a change of management. Only breakfast is served nowadays. The new staff is also friendly but only few speak good English.
The prices were reasonable but in fact become a bit to high these days, as services have decreased.
But you can still see the wall of fame (all great actors and theater director who have stayed in Matisov) and once when I was there it was the set for a television serial.

The hotel is located on an isle east from the city centre.
The hotel is closed to some of then ice water channels of the city and 25 minutes walk from teh Ermitage. The hotel offers to its guests a free bus service to teh nearest subway stations. We booked a room for 2 people and a baby and get a mini apartment consisting of 2 rooms + bathroom. 1 room had a doulble bed teh otehr one a couch where 2 pax could sleap. The area of teh hotel we stayed in was renovated. Breakfest is quite poor but we did not really care.
The people on teh desk are really cool and helpfull aldo they do not all speck english.
The hotel can help you getting your invitation for the VISA. They will charge 12€ per person and handle the file to a specialised agency that send us the invitations whithin 24 hours.

After 3 days in a too small hotel at nevsky I was searching for a nice hotel. I found this a little more from the centre. I like the Matisov Domnick hotel very much. Nice staff and nice rooms. I booked a standart room, because they were full I got a Deluxe room. Not only for one night but for the whole stay. I went with my motorbike and I could park my machine in front of the hotel. At night the gate will be closed. Distance to centre is pretty long but I have heard that Matisov has now its own small busses which brings hotelguests to the centre.
Next time when I visit St. Petersburg I will visit Matisov again. Nice rooms and good breakfast.

Stayed here on business, having previously stayed here a few years back.

This hotel is very average. It's not particularly cheap, nor particularly expensive. It is a bit out-of-the-way so if you don't speak Russian and therefore can't flag down passing cars to get a lift, you'll spend a lot on official taxis.

Rooms are decent, if unspectacular. Staff are very good and friendly by Russian standards. Breakfast is not great by Russian standards.

Not the best choice, St. Petersburg hotels are a very mixed bag, so don't rule it out.
