We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Park Inn, it was much better than we had expected it to be. We met with the first pleasant surprise at the front desk – we had booked a standard double room and I had requested a view of the bay; apparently one was not available, so as a gesture of goodwill we were upgraded to a business class room free of charge. The view from the top-floor room was sensational – and thanks to the terrible weather, bucketing rain all weekend, we made the most of it. Coming back from our wanderings around town soaked to the skin, we holed up in the room with all sorts of treats bought at the local supermarket and watched the world go about its soggy business below.
The room was great – a reasonable size, fully refurbished and contemporary in feel with amenities like a flat screen TV, bathrobes, slippers, tea making facilities and a mini bar. We could open the window for ventilation (quite a breeze off the bay at that height), the room was spotlessly clean and we had no issues at all with noise from other rooms, even though we were there on a Saturday night and there were functions going on in the hotel. The bathroom was spacious and had a heated floor – which came in handy for drying out wet shoes etc – and security was excellent with swipe card access needed to enter our floor from the lifts. Thick curtains meant that we could block out all light at night (I imagine that this would be very helpful during the white nights period in summer) and we slept like logs.
The front desk staff was extremely helpful – everyone spoke English far better than I could speak Russian and they helped us with maps and information about buses, buying tickets, ordering a taxi to the airport and so on. Breakfast (included in the rate) was a feast and we were spoilt for choice. The location was extremely central for downtown shopping and explorations. We had nothing to complain of at all!
Sure, it wasn’t the cheapest hotel in town but we thought that we received excellent value and it was worth every ruble to us. We loved what we saw of Murmansk and plan to go again some day to see it in more detail (hopefully in better weather); we’ll definitely stay at the Park Inn when we return.
