I stayed at the Izmailovo Gamma hotel with a work colleague. When we arrived having landed in Moscow, we were taken to this hotel. It is not just one hotel, but a complex of hotels. It is huge. We stayed in the Gamma hotel which might just be the largest. I am told that the hotels in this complex were built for the 1980 Olympic Games. This explains the feel of the place. It is quite impersonal due to its size.
The check in process seemed to take ages. We had not arrived at a particularly busy time; it was about 19:00. I understand that foreign visitors require some extra checking, e.g. that your visa is valid, but some 15 minutes were required to check in. Fortunately the staff had a reasonable command of English.
Having checked in, I went to my room on the farthest reaches of floor 26. The room itself was comfortable and typical of international style hotels. There was a fridge in the room, but nothing in it. There was one bottle of water out on the table. You do not want to drink the water from the taps as it has a definite brownish hue. Not that I was thinking of doing so. There is a room on each floor in which there is a drinking water dispenser.
As we had just arrived and had no idea of where to eat, we had paid for a meal in the restaurant. This was a fixed price, and was a buffet style meal. I cannot say that I was particularly impressed by the quality of the food. It was OK, but nothing special in the slightest. The hot food was more warm food. We did order a beer, and for a ½ litre each it was very expensive. I think that the most telling thing about the restaurant in the evening is that there are not many people in it. I would recommend that you try elsewhere for an evening meal.
I have been told by someone who has stayed there as well, that there are reasonable restaurants not too far away. I am also told that the Metro station is very close by and the hotel is well situated for travelling around Moscow.
Breakfast the next morning was better than the evening meal. The restaurant was very busy, and there was a good selection of hot, sorry warm, food and cold items. I think the breakfast was worth the money, but is it not anything to write home about.
Check out seemed to be more efficient than check in, as all you needed to do was to give them your room key and room number.
One thing that was very useful for us was that we could pay for an extra half day, so that we could check out by 20:00 rather than 12:00. This enabled us to leave our belongings in the hotel whilst out on business during the day. We needed to leave in the evening as we were catching an overnight train to Kursk.
I would stay in this hotel again, simply because it was convenient, and did not cost an arm and a leg. As I have mentioned, it is huge and impersonal.
