As we were dropped off in a alley way off the main Bucharest-Otopeni motorway, we should have known what was to come. The hotel charges to enter the compound; even if you are just being dropped off, so we decided to spare our friends the charge and walk the last 200m on our own. Hotel Rin and Hotel Confort are basically the same hotel with different entrances. Hotel Rin being '4 star' as opposed to Confort's 3. I am not sure what the stars stand for but I doubt it is the same reliable rating system that most are familiar with. Entering the lobby, the hotel was clean enough but loud music was echoing around the entrance, even though we arrived at 22.00.
We were greeted by a stern faced receptionist who was busily having a conversation with another employee. After he pulled himself away he took our details, and began the long process of checking us in. During this time he spent most of the time answering phones. I recognise this isn't his 'fault' but I wish that when you are being checked in that you are the focus. Clearly one staff member is not enough for the hotel at this time of night. We asked for a double room, but we given a twin, perhaps because we were a male couple travelling together. At first my partners card was 'declined', and he asked for another card. When we looked at the receipt, the card had not been declined but there was a communication error. The receptionist seemed non plussed when this was pointed out and shrugged when we asked him to try again. After it worked the second time and he spent several minutes inspecting the card after which we were granted permission to move to our room. The room itself was OK. The bathroom on the other hand was quite dirty. Some new sealer around the moldy base of the shower wouldn't go amiss and perhaps individual toiletries rather than the 'public toilet' style hand pump for shampoo and shower gel that greeted us in the shower. The mini bar fridge was broken. When we mentioned this the next morning, we were greeted another shrug of shoulders. Ditto for the internet.
We were told the restaurant was open until 23.30 which was helpful as we hadn't eaten. A quick trip to the empty restaurant was enough to know that the extortionate prices were enough to fill of stomachs. The music that has been playing in the reception was now revealed to actually be emerging from the strip club in the basement. Leaflets offering all sorts of services were strewn around the lobby. Enough to send a shiver down most people's spines.
Breakfast was good. Probably the only plus point of the whole unpleasant experience. We made our way to reception for our free airport transfer (the main attraction of staying at this hotel), we were rudely told that there was no transfer at 09.30 (even though the night before we were explicitly told about it), and we would have to pay for a taxi (something we wanted to avoid in Bucharest due to the extortionate 'tourist' rates most drivers charge) or wait until the transfer at 10.00, as it happened this was fine as we had extra time but if we hadn't been in that position we would have been forced to take a cab. No apology or explanation, which the implication that we had made up the 09.30 transfer! Outrageous.
Avoid at all costs!
