I booked my room by contacting the hotel over the Internet. They were quick to respond and held the room for a 30% deposit. They arranged a taxi to pick me up at the airport for a reasonable 30 Euro from the international Roland Garros Airport at St. Denis about 45 minutes away. The taxi driver told me his company organizes different minibus trips around Reunion every day for about 65 Euro per person. Reception can arrange this. Had I known I wouldn’t have booked a different hotel every night and made the Swalibo my base on the West Coast.
Service is very friendly. I asked for bus schedules (the bus is right around the corner from the hotel) to get to Cilaos and they printed them all out, neatly highlighted all my connections for me and even gave me information about bus routes and things to see in Cilaos.
The hotel is set around a small pool courtyard and I had room number 1 on the far side of the pool which was away from the restaurant and quiet. The room is average size, bright and clean. Wooden dresser, table and stool a bit old and TV tiny (and only with French channels). Bathroom is small. WIFI Internet costs Euro 6 a day and signal was not great from my room. But the room was very clean and pleasant and the bed quality was good.,
The hotel has a deal with a nearby beach club and you can get free use of snorkeling equipment. It is only a five minute walk to the beach (if that—I can’t figure out how the previous reviewer took 10 minutes to walk to the beach! Maybe she missed the pedestrian access:) ) and it is a lovely beach with a fringing reef with waves breaking over it that ensures the water near the beach is calm. It’s great for kids and taking an early morning or evening job along the beach is a treat.
Breakfast was good if you remember that French breakfast consists of bead and jam. Anything extra is a bonus. They served cereal (French types that will not please Angola Saxons), fruit, crepes, pain au chocolat, croissant, and yoghurt. Otherwise, the restaurant is VERY expensive and the food quality is mediocre. There are unfortunately not a lot of other choices in Saline Les Bains although you might want try the Moroccan around the corner. There are some good and atmospheric beach restaurants on Hermitage Beach a bit further up towards St. Gilles.
I would stay here again but give the restaurant a miss.
