“My favorite weekend getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

If you have a place where serenity, calm and overall happiness washes over you then you know how I feel at Shangri-La's Mactan Resort. this is my favorite getaway from the noise and pollution of Manila. This was my third visit to the resort, Feb 11-13, 2012. We had bad weather most of the weekend but I still came away feeling de-stressed. I was lucky and had one of the newly renovated rooms. The room was beautiful and I'll add a picture.
The staff is the friendliest of any Shangri La property I've experienced (I've stayed in 5). They remember what I drink, where I like to sit, etc. The guests are a variety of nationalities and the staff seems to cope despite many language barriers.
The small beach is fabulous and the coral and tropical fish can't be beat. If you like to snorkel, imagine not having to book a trip but just walking to the beach, putting on snorkel gear and there you are!
This is a very family friendly resort although I don't visit with children. There are a lot of activities right on the property.
The food is fabulous. Cowrie Cove is by far my favorite and so far the chef has met every personal request.
I plan to go back next month!

Room Tip: There is a renovation on going so any room will be brand new or fairly new. If you need a quiet day...

“Shangri la is shangri la”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

When you stay in a shangri la hotel, you know what to expect. It is always a safe choice. Service is good. Amenities are excellent. The one in Mactan island in cebu is no different. I only stayed here for one night after having stayed in the same hotel 5 or 6 years ago. I had breakfast in the same restaurant and the food was consistently good. In short, if you want to take the path well- trodden, and have a pleasant stay without any hiccups, stay in shangri-la.

Room Tip: The new wing is nice.

A complex for the whole family. Great rooms, amenities and food. The pool has a kids area to let the couples have some quality time. Various restaurants in the property.

Relax and sit back to enjoy and be worry free!

“family room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Stayed at this resort for 5 nights in a family room. Rooms were very new and clean and immaculatley presented. Beds were super comfortable and were by far the best beds that we slept on on our whole holiday to the Philippines. Kids had a ball at this resort in the pools and the beach. Beach was glorious and swimming with the fish was a highlight for all. Service at this hotel is fantastic and what you would expect from a 5 star resort. Buffet breakfast that was put on in the main wing would have to be one of the best that I have experieced in my travels , Staff were so accomodating for the kids and even cooked them chicken nuggets and penne bolognaise for my son when this was not being served at the buffet the first night. Hotel is on the expensive side so watch your spending as ou room service bill was $900 AUD for 6 days however it was all worth it for the great time we had at the resort. We ventured into Cebu city a couple of times to the shopping centres and these felt safe and we wernt looked at for being foreigners as much as in other parts of the Philippines. SHopping malls in CEBu reminded me a bit of SIngapore. Would definately recommend this hotel even for the most fussiest traveller

Room Tip: family room was large and more than suitable for a family of 2 Adults and 2 Children

“Shangri-hell.”

My husband and 2 young children spent 4 nights at the shangri-la in Cebu having come from Hong Kong which is where we live. We stayed on the club lounge floor in the ocean wing. Our trip was very unpleasant and we plan never to return. Specifics:

Rooms: dated, small, think ramada inn circa 1980. Balcony tiny. Room smelled of smoke despite being on the non smoking floor. Bed was miserably uncomfortable. Bathroom was decent. We had a light that was out and no one who cleaned our room over 4 days noticed to change it. When we called the front desk to inquire about changing rooms to a corner suite, we were misquoted a price that was double our rate. So we stayed in our cramped state. Big mistake.

Club Lounge: the complimentary wine was nice but the food was awful. We went for breakfast one morning and both had eggs/omelet that were greasy. Ordering in room dining for the kids took forever.

Restaurants: breakfasts overall were good (tides and acqua) except for the god awful coffee they served out of the machine. Lattes and standard coffee were both served from here and were terrible. The italian restaurant acqua was the best.

Beach: small and rocky. Not a selling point.

Kids club/toddler adventure zone: one day the toddler zone had such a stench, we couldn't use it. Adventure zone for the bigger kids was nice but only 2 hours free for the entire stay. Beyond that you needed to pay.

Service: overall the service was nice, staff is lovely and kind, very welcoming to guests. However, if you really need to get something done or fixed, we learned too late that you must go through the general manager.

Spa: my massage was sub par at best. In order to use the facilities you put your things in one locker and then transfer everything to another locker in the villa where you're getting your treatment. That means moving wet and dry clothing along with shoes, etc. Seemed strange and cumbersome. Shower does not provide hot water. Spa aesthetics were nice but the treatment/massage was not.

Outdoor play area/pools: this is a selling point if you have older children unlike mine whoaware 1 and 3. No pool accessories/floaties so bring your own.

Generally speaking, our experience was awful and we won't be returning. Ever.
