“Great hotel and facilities but check your bill properly.”

I have broken this review into the positives & the negatives of the hotel:

Positive:
The rooms are very modern, large and very clean. The shower is awesome - really good pressure. The beds are extremely comfortable. Room service is good and efficient. The location is right in the middle of the shopping district so it's handy plus there are loads of restaurants closeby. I liked that the cleaners asked us when we'd like our room cleaned so we could be out of the room when it was being done. The lobby bar is really nice for a light meal and drink - there is always music playing there. We have a baby and we were impressed that in a city hotel it had a kids pool - very accommodating. We all had treatments in the spa which was reasonbly priced and good - it is open 24 hours so it's very convenient. Breakfast buffet was very good (and I don't like buffets) but they cook eggs to order and have an extensive array of food.

Negative:
The hotel is extremely busy - there are always functions going on and there are loads of people most nights - this hotel is more suited for business rather than leisure. The reception desk are disorganised. We had originally booked one night through this site but then decided to stay an additional 3 nights . Despite extensive emails prior to our travel asking them to group the stay together, they failed to do this so we had to explain our situation once again so check-in became a long drawn out process. In addition, the extra nights came with breakfast but the girl who checked us in told me it didn't. Again, had to explain it did (luckily I remembered the name of the guy who took my reservation) so she could confirm it with him - if not, I don't think it would have been resolved in our favour. Our friend who was travelling with us also had the same issues with his check in. My mother-in-law decided to stay a night so I booked her in on a lower rate than ours - I checked our bills when we got home (we paid for her room) and they put her rate as the same as ours despite us booking on a lower rate (they charged us an extra Php1,500 plus all the extensive taxes and service charge. We ate at the Japanese restaurant one night... ordered live lobster tempura, sashimi, wagyu beef & premium sushi... apart from the beef, the dishes were below standard of a typical japanese restaurant - the tempura was the most disppointing as the batter was really heavy rather than light so it overpowered the lobster (it was like eating posh fish & chips lol). For the price they charge, you would expect it to be better.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the city - not the pool.

“Trying to make money on the wrong things”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I am currently still staying at the Makati Shangri La as last stop on an asian business trip on which I visited Singapore (Pan Pacific), Bangkok (Radisson Suites), Hong Kong (Icon) and now Manila. And I hardly ever take the effort to write a review unless it is extremely good or extremely dissapointing. Well I actually looked forward coming here but they totally failed to impress.
I am not going to argue the design which is a matter of taste. But from a luxury hotel chain like Shangri La I expected a bit more style in they way they want to make moeny on you. Two small examples to indicate what I mean: 1) they charge a lot of money for an asian hotel even compared to Sing and HK) but but two tiny bottles of water in your room, which is saving money on the wrong things, 2 more importantly the lady who checks you in immediately starts bothering you with an add on executive package (breakfast plus transfer) irrespective of whether it would be beneficial for you or not. After accepting it (as my collegue did) we did the math over dinner and opted out after dinner. I can understand you want to make money but don't harrass people who just have arrived (probably most with a jetlag) with these dodgy offers. Not blaming the check in lady here but the mere policy and moment.
And unrelated to the above, the service in the Japanese restaurant is below par in the region.
This is just getting off on the wrong foot unnecessarily. And since this is my fisrt time in a Shangri La property I become hesitant to use them in the future.

“Almost perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This is a beautiful property and I have to say, i loved my stay there.
Superior rooms, are a bit small - so we moved to club floor. Much better and the Horizon lounge is very good. Shame only one restroom there, and lines did develop at times.
Showers need new units installed, they still have the sticking out the wall type there.
Other than that, the F and B was superb, service was top notch and I would happily stay here again and again.

Room Tip: Stay away from the superior, far too small for a hotel of this class.

“Great Hotel but old rooms and very old bathroom knobs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Old carpet - Poor quality of service / very old style rooms.....

Especially the corporate lounge receptionists are busy in browsing than welcoming guests.

I have stayed all over shangri la in the world, this shangri - la has to improve on service and follow up whether the requests have been fulfilled.

“It deserves its reputation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Makati Shangri-la is one of the high-end hotels in Metro Manila, and it has the reputation of being the best.

My husband and I got a chance to stay there for business, and we enjoyed every minute of it. The service was impeccable, the security quite alert. They provide free wi-fi for all its guests, without discrimination.

You may call me weird, but what I appreciate from their room is the availability of Ironing tools. I also appreciate their thick robes and their oh so comfy bed.

I did not like the long line in the buffet area (for breakfast) and the fact that we had to be seated in the lobby, where everyone can see us.

There was a tub in the room we stayed in (superior room). I was saddened by the fact that they didn't provide bath gels or anything we can use for it.

One thing I took a note of was how they decorated the rooms -- focusing on curves instead of harsh lines -- you can hardly see any square objects in the room! circular ceiling, octagon-shaped shower area, oval mirror... even the light fixtures are round!

Overall, we had a great time, and if opportunity arises, we will surely go back and stay in this hotel.

p.s. a lot of business deals are being transacted in their lobby area. Try their ginger ale :)
