The first time I went to Baguio was in 1989, a year before the killer earthquake devastated the summer capital of the Philippines. I was only 12 years old. Two years and two decades later, I returned. So much has changed in the city. I find Baguio crowded, main roads with heavy traffic, Burnham Park seems neglected. My memory of Baguio when I was a child was so vivid I was somehow saddened with what happened to Baguio. The city now look and feel like Manila, except colder.
Back then, I was so awed by Camp John Hay and even dreamt of living inside the camp when I grow up. I'm glad that there is already a hotel, The Manor. I made sure I got to stay there while in Baguio.
Lots of facilities within the Camp are still in existence. Some houses were converted into restaurants. The mini golf looks so old but still enjoyable. The tennis courts are not well maintained but playable. The picnic areas are still there, just the way I remembered them. The tall trees are as amazing. The golf course worth noticing. A new attraction, Tree Top Adventure is fun and thrilling.
What to find inside Camp John Hay:
The Manor Hotel
- a four-storey structure with very impressive architecture.
The Mile Hi Center
-strip of restaurants (Carlo's Pizza, Little John's, Mile Hi-Diner etc) and shops (Nike, Adidas, convenience store etc)
- House of Waffles and Starbucks
- Camp John Hay Golf Club
-Tree Top Adventure, Picnic Area, Pet Cemetery
Room Tip: When staying at The Manor, choose a room with a balcony but not facing the parking lot.
