“Clean, comfortable - would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

For PNG an excellent hotel, well maintained, comfortable and clean. Staff all very polite and helpful. Was taken to and from aiport. Room was spacious enough. Food was good and chef able to deal with particular foibles with no problem. Owner clearly cares for the staff and wants to maintain top standards. Internet was down when I was there which was a pain but beyond the hotel's control.

“Dirty and old”

I stayed here for 2 weeks in September 2011 for work and couldn't believe the disgusting service we received. We were staying in a large group (approx 80 people) and were treated as though we weren't as valuable as the "paying customers" (we were asked to sit in a desperate part of the restaurant from the "paying customers"). Dinner was paid for by our employer (A$40 per night) and instead of being offered the same choices as other customers we were asked to eat from a menu containing only two choices as they had decided it was too difficult to cater to us all. The rooms were dirty and run down, the staff behind the bar were rude and disinterested (I stood at the bar for 5 mins while an employee walked around doing his own thing in front of me before even acknowledging my existence), the room prices were ridiculous ($400 per room per night), water in the shower was constantly cold, the only warm showers I had were at 3 in the afternoon, the restaurant roof was covered in tarps as it was falling to pieces, when the rooms were cleaned the floor was left soaking wet and had pieces of hair all over it as the cleaners had clearly been using dirty water to mop. There is so much more to complain about but I think you get the idea. For the money, I'm sure there are much nicer and friendlier places to stay in Madang.

A belated response to the guest who posted this review. Firstly, we are always grateful for getting a feedback which are used to identify if our guests are sastisfied or not with the facilities and services we provide.
In this case, we have not been able to identify the real cause of the guests complaints as during this time, we had received very positive comments, particularly in view of the major construction that is taking place which resulted in the closure of the Haus Win Restaurant and the opening of the Kalibobo Haus Kibung, a new function room that is being used as a temporary restaurant. The kitchen for thje Haus Kibung is downstairs and served by a dumb waiter, initially this resulted in some confusion as waiters did not have direct contact with the staff in the kitchen - now after several months staff have got used to the system and our guests are complimenting us on the services and standard of food.
I cannot accept the critisism in regard to rooms, service or our unfriendly staff, these statesment are untrue and do not represent the attitude of all the staff at the Madang Resort.

“Unbelievable Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

I have travelled extensively around the South Pacific but never been to New Guinea, and as an adventurer and fortuantly able to please myself I decided to see what I was told to be the last frontier. A Little hesitant I convinced myself that I would like to see New guinea for the first time so with a little googling I descovered what appeared to be an adventure in Madang and then from further investigation I decided to book the Kallibobo Resort which I was told was attached to the Madang Resort facilities. Well I have to say that booking was my best decision and on arival in Madang was picked up by the Hotel Bus, greeting by the most loveable man, they called him Busy Bee, ( Funny name) who took me to the reception area and after signing, took me to the Kallibobo Village in a Resort Cart.
My room was in the Kalibobo lagoon and the verandah overhang this beautiful crystal water.
This was just the start of my adventure in paradise. I made use of the fabulour Haus Win Restaurant, with the best of meals made available, I even had the Chinese menu that was availbale one day. I went on a few organised tours and the staff were so friendly I could never belive that such a place existed. My room was spotless and the staff exceptional, The surrounds of the Kalibobo Village and the Madangb Resort were a picture to behold. I was sad to leave and must say a tear welled my eyes as the staff farewelled me.
I will return and will be the Resorts best advocate, I had a wonderful stay and my thanks to all the staff in making me feek so welcome.

Thank you for your review. The Management and staff always try their best to please our guests and we are proud to read what you and other guests say about the Madang Resort.
We are very concious of the fact that we should be seen through the eyes of our guests and even the slightest recommendation is taken seriously

“Amazing Place”

This place was great. The service was very accommodating, grounds were beautiful, rooms were beautiful, and food was excellent! I had a wonderful time in Madang and highly recommend others to go here as well!

Special thanks to Titus for making our trip extra pleasant. Also hats off to the entire dining staff. The Giri Giri among the other dishes was top notch. If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would.

When you are in Madang, make sure to visit Jais Aben. Very beautiful resort there with awesome snorkeling and kayaking right off their beach. Their trip advisor reviews aren't too hot, but when I visited I was pretty jealous.

Also their kitchenettes are merely outside sinks... Don't go expecting a small kitchen.

Room Tip: Email the place before you go

I was pleased to hear the guest enjoyed the 'Girigiri' which has become the most popular choice on our menu. We are planning a new menu to coincide with the re-opening of the famous Haus Win restaurant and its temporary relocation to the new Function Room at the end of August.
The kitchenette in some of the rooms at Kalibobo Village include a sink, fridge, micro-oven, electric jug and cockery. They were not designed as full kitchens, merely to provide guests the opportunity to have a simple catering if required. In other rooms we have a full kitchens in both the Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village - if suites with kitchens are required it is important to book well ahead.
We encourage guests to reserve tables in restaurants, this enables the Food & Beverage to plan adequately not only staff, but food preparation. We have since placed a notice in all rooms in this regard. Thanks for the comment. - Sir Peter Barter

“Well located and excellent choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

The Madang Resort - including the contiguous Kalibobo Village - is an excellent choice in Madang. The grounds of the combined resort complex are extensive and immaculately maintained. They have a waterfront location with excellent views across the narrow channel to Kranket Island. Rooms in Kalibobo Village are spacious and comfortable - all with their own balconies/verandas. Staff are friendly and helpful although service from the room staff can be a bit patchy - often rooms aren't serviced til very late in the day - though perhaps this is only the case when the resort is full? The Haus Win Restaurant building was being renovated (a new restaurant being developed upstairs) so a bit disruptive. Food was excellent and room service too (don't be tricked into thinking the room service menu in your room is all you can order - just walk up to the restaurant and order anything) the daily 3-course dinner specials are excellent value. The resort is a short walk from the centre of Madang and there are good nearby eating options too - like Coastwatchers Hotel just down the road (superb 3-bean curry at lunchtime) The resort management should make a small effort to make sure the information in the rooms is up-to-date and consistent. The resort map is out of date and the printed resort information is inconsistent, so it's not clear exactly is available in terms of services. A minor complaint however.

We thank the guest for the review. We apologise for any inconvenience during the reconstruction and construction of the new building to accommodate a new Function Room as well as the total reconstruction of the famous Haus Win. This has resulted in some delays along with the Resort operating at full capacity.
All the room compendiums are being updated and the video information channel is updated daily. New exciting menus are being planned for the opening of the new restaurant.
