“The waft from the Sceptic tank”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Drifts across the restaurant which detracts somewhat from the absolutely divine view. The hotel is charmingly, just a little delapidated but it is very easy to while away the hours on one of the terraces and a glorious beach is only steps away. It is all presided over by a jolly Austrian called Charles who sports a rather too obvious rug. If like me you only need some coffee at breakfast make sure that you are very specific otherwise you will get a juice and a side plate with a few chunks of fruit automatically deliverd and a bill for $5.25. Who ever cranks up the background music should be shot, romantic hits belting out at 9.am does not compliment a hangover. Contadora is an expensive Island so bring as much booze and supplies with you as you can. The local shops seem to think that being 50 odd miles away from the mainland justifies charging $15 for a bottle of wine that will run you $4.85 at El Rey in Panama City.

“Best location on Contadora!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We enjoyed our stay, which got off on a shaky start when we were not given the room we reserved. But we were moved the following morning and thoroughly enjoyed being in the Bella Vista Suite, worth the price. Also, we changed our departing flight to a later one and were able to keep our room until 4:00, very accommodating.
The location is pure perfection! Could not imagine staying on Contadora and not being on the beach. Hope to return and would stay here again.

Room Tip: The Bella Vista is by far the best room, private, own balcony, but you pay for it. The other ocean v...

“Not as nice a place as the name would have you believe”

We arrived on the island on a Friday morning, without a hotel reservation. We had encountered one hotel with no vacancy when we found the Villa Romantica. We presumed we had checked in after being told a room was available, the nightly rate, completing the paper work and offering our credit card. Our room wouldn't be available for 4 hours and we accepted that. Upon our return, we were told by both the receptionist and the manager/owner that they had no room. They offered no explanation other than a flippant sorry while they shrugged their shoulders. We were upset we had wasted 4 hours of time that could have been spent finding accomodation. Equally disturbing was when the owner blamed his receptionist even though he was present the entire time we were checking in.

Our experience at the Villa Romantica stood alone as everyone else we dealt with during our stay on Isla Contadora was honest and trustworthy.

Dear Joan,

It is true that we tried to help you find a room.

However, we also told you that there was a guest who had book a room but not confirmed it. This is why we had to wait for the plan arriving around lunch time to see if that guest arrived. Only if that guest didn’t arrive, we would have been able to offer you a room as the rest of the rooms was booked.

As that guest was on that plane we had to tell you that the room for which we had put you on the waiting list, was not available for you.

I offered you to bring you to another hotel but you declined.

We offered you a free cocktail.

We also offered you a place where you could change into you swim gear, so that you could use the beach directly next to our hotel and go swimming.

Finally, I also took you on a tour around the island in my car. All of this for free, of course.

On Contadora there are only about 100 rooms available in total. The Villa Romantica is the most beautiful and interesting place on the island. That’s why we strongly recommend to book a room in advance in the main season.

I do understand that you felt angry, however, we have done our best to help you. And I was sorry that it didn’t work out.

We would like to wish you all the very best for your future.

Best regards,

Charly Pree

“A nice quirky hotel, but lower your expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Its hard to review the hotel without putting it in the context of where it is -- on an island that is amazingly beautiful and yet feels like time has passed it by. So, in reviewing the hotel, I give it much more leeway than I would for any other hotel that I have ever stayed at or have revewed. If I stayed at a hotel anywhere else in the world that had the same negatives as this hotel, I would give it zero stars, but given the location and the overall ambience, I give it three.

The positives:
1. Location, location, location. The hotel sits over a beautiful beach and its hard to beat sitting outside and having a drink while staring at the ocean. Also, it was close enough to walk to the "center of town"
2. The front desk and the waitresses were generally very friendly and helpful.
3. The other hotel choices that we saw near the beach (ie., the Punta Galeon) looked pretty rundown, with a pool that turned more green and brown each day.
4. The rooms (Caracol 1 and 2) were very large - oddly decorated, but large.

The negatives:
1. The hotel looks very rundown in spots. The middle/side of the hotel has what is supposed to be a mini golf course, but it looks like a disaster area.
2. They ration towels like there is a world wide shortage. There were zero hand towels, wash cloths, towels to put on the stone floor or any other towels (or bath mats) in the room other than one medium size bath towel for each person. When one of our children showered in our room, they would have to bring their towel from their room.
3. While they give you a small round soap, they dont give shampoo, conditioner, etc.
4. The water was tepid one day (but hot the other 2). Also, each night, it seemed that water was completely shut off for several hours (I dont know if that happened around the entire island).

All in all, if you are looking for a comfortable place with a great beachfront location to get away from the world, this hotel is a good choice. If I were going back to the island, however, I would probably consider one of the B&B's that although not on the beach, at least from outside appearances, appear to be much nicer.

“Best on an Overrated Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Isla Contadora is one of the most overpriced, under-serviced places I have ever been in my life. It is a microcosm of all that is right/wrong with Panama. The natural beauty is very impressive. It is a 25 min plane ride from Panama City.

But, the vast majority of people who own, run, or work at places in Panama could not care less about the quality of products and services provided. Clearly, they are more concerned about really loud/bad music, watching satellite tv and living amongst trash and abandoned buildings.

The one exception to this on Contadora is Villa Romantico. While overpriced, the quality of the food, service and facilities are surprisingly high for Panamanian standards. Of the three places on the island we tried (Gerald's - silly bad, and Punta Galeon - even worse) Villa Romantico stood out as the best place on the island.

Again, the beaches, diving, fishing, nature, etc. are amazing. In order to properly enjoy these wonderful places, you have two options. Arrive on your yacht, anchor for 1-2 nights and do diving/fishing/exploring the island and eat at Romantico. Or, buy your own island, build your own house and staff it with personnel from elsewhere. Then when your money has been fully cleaned, abandon it.
