Even nicer than the pictures suggest. We booked 2 nights in advance for the end of January and boy are we glad we did. We saw many a traveller turned away without a reservation. We flew into David and then took a taxi to the bus depot ($5) - negotiate with the driver because he will try and charge per person. We then took the bus (yes a yellow school bus) complete with locals and a chicken cost for only $1.75. The scenery was gorgious and the roads were being re-paved. Once arriving in Boquete we took a taxi to the Garden Inn for $3 although sometimes it is only $2 (although we always pay $3 as gas is expensive).
The GI is an oasis in the rainforest. The young man (Abel) who greeted us was very friendly and helpful. He recommended a couple of restaurants in the area, booked us a coffee and hiking tour and a shuttle to Bocas at the end. For $99per night (no tax if paid in cash) it is a real bargain inclusive of continental breakfast to eat in (yogurt, granola, cereal, fresh bread and fabulous Boquete coffee) or packaged to go with you on your tour. You can also order a cooked meal for $4. We also had a taste of the areas coffee when we arrived and a free drink at happy hour every evening. The young owners susan and jay were fantastic hosts, along with Abel went out of their way to ensure every tour booked, every request met were as you had ordered.
The GI surpassed my 3 pet peeves - a good thing. The room has a large safe, the mini bar food and drinks are cheap and there is free wi-fi. God bless.
The walk to town is 25 minutes and very scenic along the river. We chose to cab it and take tours with pick up and drop off service instead of renting car. Taxi's cost between $2 and $3 between town and the GI, slightly more in the evening (if you can get one). A couple of times we were able to convince taxis with families in them to allow us to squish in to get back to our hotel.
In town is a laundry mat across from the fire/ambulance station. For $3 a bag full, you can have your clothes washed, dried and folded ready for pick-up the same or next day.
The morning we left, the GI arranged a shuttle to Bocas for $40 per person which would have uncluded a ferry from Almirate. On route, we discovered that the road to Bocas and Costa Rico were closed in 6 places due to the indiginous people protesting the governments negotiations over mining. With that protest, gasoline supplies in David to Bocas and surrounding areas were depleted. The quick thinking shuttle company arranged a water taxi prior to the road closure to Bocas for us (1.5 hours in length). We were lucky as we were able to make it to Bocas but many were unable except those who were able to get flights that were filled due to the government providing free flights to the locals because of the road closure. The quality of this shuttle company is only one example of the businesses that the GI dealt with.
