“Excellent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

I stayed as part of a 4 person group for 4 nights in November this year. We had some concerns given the negative reviews on this site, but found it an excellent place to stay. The hosts were particularly helpful in organising all the activities we were interested in; horse riding, sand boarding, shark fishing etc. I suspect some of the negative reviews are effectively cultural; the hosts are germanic and by that I mean very organised and by British standards perhaps a little abrupt. However, they were very warm and really I could not fault them.

“Friendly and Peaceful”

It's unfortunate reading some of the other reviews, for our own experience was thoroughly pleasant. The owners were helpful and attentive and the rooms in this quiet retreat were very comfortable. Swakopmund is not exactly a budget resort, but the Secret Garden was very good value. The Bistro was a great place to eat. We'd stay there again any time.

“Well Kept Secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

In spite of postings commenting on the inhospitable inn keepers, we decided to brave a night at the Secret Garden. Our experience couldn't have been better. The owner we'd been warned about proved to be an absolute charmer - fun, helpful, gregarious. The location is minutes from the water and not much farther to the centre of town. Rooms are clean and pleasant; the garden is a delight. Although we went out for meals - except for breakfast (which was fine) - we wished we'd had time to taken in The Bistro. All in all, our stay was excellent! I do plan to return on my next visit to Swakop.

“Nice facilities; rude owners”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011 via mobile

On first impressions, we liked it - we were shown around by a friendly receptionist, and all seemed good.

Things started going wrong however when we met the owners - they were rude to staff and guests. Our tour guides (black) were very obviously treated differently (they tried to move them and deny them breakfast; the receptionist who had checked them in to a standard room was forced to quit). When we booked activities through our guide rather than through then (which they had been very pushy about) they were clearly irritated and told my brother his activity (paragliding) was a 'waste of time' before walking off.

On the plus side, the breakfast is nice (but don't move the butter - got told off for that too!)

We find the comments of this review unfare for the following reasons:
* The receptionist was reprimanded for allowcating the tour guides the best room ( even though there was a rooming list and the room had been allocated to the parents of the group)
* She walked out on us a week after the guests had been there - thus how could they know she was leaving?
*TG's pay a fraction of the normal costs but are still given standard guest rooms and are not treated differently.
* That they were denied breakfast is simply not true. They did however come late on the first day and were asked if they still want breakfast before it was cleared away.
* We offer a comprehensive information and booking service for activities. Tour guides earn commission on activities sold and will thus try and sell as much as possible with-out inside knowledge.
The butter story! Butter is placed on each individual table and should not be taken and used at the buffet as it clutters the desplay and looks unsightly.

“Awful - don't bother”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

Our family of 8 stayed here recently for 3 nights. The Guest house itself is pleasant, clean and set round a courtyard garden. However the owners are something else, unfriendly, overbearing and one more than one occasion downright rude. Not only to us but they also treated our local guide and his assistant badly, we were shocked at their attitude to them - need we say more !! Don't leave tips in their box on reception, we bypassed that to make sure the people who did the work got them.
We certainly wouldn't go back there.

* refer to comments by same group above.
* the only incident with the guides was that they washed the muddy bus in the parking area
without asking and wasted water which had to be cleaned up by our staff.
* we have a tip box and money is shared by all staff to ensure that everyone gets an equal share ( including laundry and night staff ) Management do not share tips.
