“Boho Shabby Chic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

Yes yes yes - there are numerous reviews here about the tattiness and even some comments about the low levels of cleanliness but all I can say is ... we LOVED Maisons des Artistes and stayed 4 nights there. We stayed 3 nights in the smaller Domino room, which while a little damp in the morning was spotlessly clean and serviced on a daily basis to a good level. We stayed the last night in the stunning penthouse Pavilion and managed to bargain down the price a bit to a more reasonable €100. We would heartily recommend this place as the terrace is amazing - as both a suntrap and place to chill, with stunning sea views of La Skala ramparts in the West of the Essaouira Kasbah.

The service was friendly (if a bit quiet) and the breakfasts hearty and well prepared - again stunning taking them on the terrace with the sea air morning breeze.

The only slight complaint would be the dampness of the rooms in the morning (due to the sea air) and yep some of the furniture and fittings are (whilst funky) pretty tatty. BUT it is clean though and the stairs that sometimes smelled musty when you came up them are shared with other residences and once you're on the terrace most (normal) people will have got over that. And please please please get some WiFi so you can check out recommendations for dining from the Riad ...

We feel this place is not to be missed though and a curious mix of Moroccan Riad and quaint Cornish seafront cottage. Check it out if you're in Essaouira ... it's also in the Kasbah so you're 2 minutes from some incredible artisan shops and 5 minutes from the top 3 restaurants we found in Essaouira.

Loved it.

“Please do some cleaning!”

This would be a beautiful hotel. Plus points are location, sea views and large rooms. But previous reviews are right the stairway and entrance smell of cat pee and the place is dirty there is no getting round that. I felt like buying some rubber gloves, bleach and a Hoover and getting stuck in. The room was airy and bright with an amazing sea view but the bed sheets were damp and didn't seem clean, the toilet wasn't clean and they have stained towels in random colours and dressing gowns that look like they come from a charity shop in funny colours. I was wondering why they bothered with those at all. The toilet is also right next to a floor to ceiling window straight into the main walkway only covered by an I'll fitting curtain. We checked out after 2 days. Please don't confuse 'rustic and artistic' with plain old shabby and uncared for. The charge was 90 euro per nt for this place and was so massively overpriced. Lesson learned was this; if you can get into the top 20 hotels on tripadvisor there is a reason for this because they are GOOD places to stay. We moved to an enormous room at the riad malaika for 60 euro Which was beautiful, clean and we were made to feel so welcome. Maison des artistes really could be good but they just need to invest a little and look after it.

“Heavenly Terrace and Amazing rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

This place is very unique. If your an artist or enjoy art than this place will blow your mind. every where you look there is a different paintings or sculptures. There is a lounge full of books and different knick knacks and the view from the terrace will blow your mind. They have very art deco sun chairs and big fluffy white couches. Huge mirrors. When we got to our room we were plesantly surprised to have a little mini bar with free fanta, water, coke, etc. They refilled the fridge every day.
The only problem I had was that our room did not have much in the way of air circulation. No A/C but the riad is right on the ocean so you get plenty of fresh air whistling through.
I just get really claustrophobic in a room without windows. We did have an opening at the top. That did help when I realized I could open the hatch from the terrace to get a little air.

“beautiful place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

This riad is beautiful. Amazing view over the sea and the old town. Yes, it is a bit "used", yes , there is only a bath tube with well not so much water flow and yes, the carpets are old and used BUT the place has real charm, the staff is friendly and helpful and there is so much beautiful art and small pieces to discover. Nothing for travelers staying in chain hotels but others will love it....
