Yes yes yes - there are numerous reviews here about the tattiness and even some comments about the low levels of cleanliness but all I can say is ... we LOVED Maisons des Artistes and stayed 4 nights there. We stayed 3 nights in the smaller Domino room, which while a little damp in the morning was spotlessly clean and serviced on a daily basis to a good level. We stayed the last night in the stunning penthouse Pavilion and managed to bargain down the price a bit to a more reasonable €100. We would heartily recommend this place as the terrace is amazing - as both a suntrap and place to chill, with stunning sea views of La Skala ramparts in the West of the Essaouira Kasbah.
The service was friendly (if a bit quiet) and the breakfasts hearty and well prepared - again stunning taking them on the terrace with the sea air morning breeze.
The only slight complaint would be the dampness of the rooms in the morning (due to the sea air) and yep some of the furniture and fittings are (whilst funky) pretty tatty. BUT it is clean though and the stairs that sometimes smelled musty when you came up them are shared with other residences and once you're on the terrace most (normal) people will have got over that. And please please please get some WiFi so you can check out recommendations for dining from the Riad ...
We feel this place is not to be missed though and a curious mix of Moroccan Riad and quaint Cornish seafront cottage. Check it out if you're in Essaouira ... it's also in the Kasbah so you're 2 minutes from some incredible artisan shops and 5 minutes from the top 3 restaurants we found in Essaouira.
Loved it.
